Sertraline and insomnia

I am on day 13 of taking 25mg, I am supposed to move up to 50mg at some point, but I am experiencing really bad insomnia, so am scared to increase the dose. Last night I took some night nurse to help me feel drowsy which worked, but obviously I can't carry on doing that!

Does anyone know if the insomnia is likely to be a side effect that will pass, or will I need to go back to the GP for different meds. I have already tried Citalopram (made me a zombie) and Mirtazapine (lovely sleep but did not touch the anxiety/depression, seemed to be make symptoms worse). Help! Confused

It did pass for me, mostly. I still have occasional restless nights but no where as bad as it was in the beginning

Hi, I was on it for 2 and a half years. It definitely settles down after a few weeks. The Dr's said after 3 or 4 weeks but for me it was more like 6. I can't remember if upping the dose made the insomnia worse. I don't think it did.

Spamfrittersforeveryone · 14/11/2018 07:54

What time of day do you take it?

Moonshine86 · 14/11/2018 07:54

Did anybody find it made them nauseous?

Moonshine86 · 14/11/2018 07:55

Also on day 13 here. I was also wondering if there is an ideal time to take it each day?

MattBerrysHair · 14/11/2018 07:59

Take it first thing in the morning to lessen sleep disruption. It played havoc with my stomach for a few weeks but it settled down eventually. I felt very sick some times.

I was also going to ask what time of day are you taking it as from what I've read, this can affect sleep patterns. I've seen many people online saying they had to switch from taking it before bed to taking it first thing in the morning so that they could sleep at night.

That said, I took mine (50mg) before bed and never had any issues with insomnia (crazy vivid dreams - yes, but no insomnia!).

Moonshine yea I found it made me feel very nauseous in the first few weeks but that did settle down, hope it does for you.

GingerbreadBlob · 14/11/2018 08:02

It can make you jittery at first.

purple8pig · 14/11/2018 08:05

I still find now it affects me, after 8 months.

I was taking it afternoon /evening and although I could get to sleep fine, I found I was waking at 5am every day, so I'm going to try taking it first thing and hope that helps xx

Thank you. I have felt really quite sick - tend not to read the side effect warnings or I would be too anxious to take it at all. Good to know it's normal.

NuttyMacaroon · 14/11/2018 08:27

I've been taking it in the morning from the start. Doctor said to do this, she knew my previous insomnia problems. Thank you for all your replies, just have to keep going and hope it settles!

It did make me feel a bit nauseous to start, but that seems to have passed now.

I switched from taking it in the morning to bedtime because I was falling asleep at my desk by mid afternoon and a liability on the school run.
What about taking it at lunchtime??

Trazadone and quetiapine ate both good. I'm on quetiapine. It can cause weight gsin but I've not had any problems .
