Hi, I have incredibly bad anxiety and postnatal ocd and postnatal depression. Please, please no horror stories or it might tip me over the edge. All I’d like to know is if any of you wash your babies bottles in antibacterial washing up liquid before sterilising. I’m in an absolutely massive panic about it and gone as far as to think that I’ve given my 9 month old cancer because I shouldn’t have been using it. I’ve changed to a special baby bottle cleanser now but I’ve been cleaning them with the antibacterial stuff for 8 months. Please let me know if you use or have used the same?

I did, my two boys are absolutely fine. 13 and 8

Wolfiefan · 23/10/2018 17:27

I have never used different or special washing up liquid. Never.
Your 9 month old doesn’t have cancer.
I do hope you’re having treatment for your anxiety, depression and OCD. Wishing you better health soon.

After 6m I put ours in the dishwasher so that'd probably far worse than normal washing up liquid.

Lwmommy · 23/10/2018 17:27

I always just just whatever washing up liquid i used for everything else, then chucked the bottles in a bi g box of cold water and milton tablet.

You have not damaged your child by using washing up liquid to wash up their bottles

WisestIsShe · 23/10/2018 17:28

I always did this and never gave it a second thought. DC 16 and 11 are in perfect health.
I don't really understand anxiety but please try and be kind to yourself.

CallMeRachel · 23/10/2018 17:37

Try not to panic, the sterilisation process will have killed off any traces of the anti bacterial chemicals anyway.

ApolloandDaphne · 23/10/2018 17:40

Please try to stop worrying. The sterilisation process will have removed all traces of the washing up liquid.

Adults eat and drink from items washed in washing up liquid everyday and if there was a link to this and to cancer I think we would all know about it by now.

Take a deep breath and continue to care for your DC like the good mum you are.

Kewqueue · 23/10/2018 17:42

I understand the panic, but it is absolutely fine!

Singlenotsingle · 23/10/2018 17:44

I've commented on your other thread. Don't panic.

Lauren83 · 23/10/2018 17:52

My DS is 9 months and his have always been washed with the normal pots

thaegumathteth · 23/10/2018 17:54

This is your anxiety talking - are you getting help?

I always used normal fairy liquid. Kids are 11 and 8 and are fine.

Please get help because you know once you’re reassured about this another panic will start .

Vi37 · 23/10/2018 18:31

Thank you all, I’m only worried because I’ve used ‘antibacterial’ Fairy. I don’t think I’d be worried if it was just normal. Has anyone used the antibacterial one? Please tell me I’m not the only one.

Are you getting treatment for your MH issues? That needs to be your priority.

Folks, kindly meant though it is, offering reassurance to someone with ocd is not helpful, in fact it maintains the cycle of worry.

scoobdoob · 23/10/2018 18:38

I always used antibacterial. I thought it would be better. Will do no harm at all.
I didnt sterilise after 9 months.
Both absolutely fine.

Vi37 · 23/10/2018 18:42

Thank you so much everyone, I understand it maintains the cycle but I’ve been managing so far, just had this minor blip and feel better after some reassurance. At least it means I’ll be able to get some sleep tonight. X

We always washed the bottles with antibacterial liquid too, both fairy and Sainsburys own.

Orchidflower1 · 23/10/2018 18:57

I did and both mine are ok. Sending you calming thoughts. I’m sure you’re doing a fab job. Flowers
