How do I go about speaking to my GP about my mental health?

My health visitor referred me in 2014 and my gp basically told me that because my children make me happy and are the reason I don't act upon my self harming thoughts, I'm ok.

I feel so embarrassed and pretty nervous about speaking to them again about it due to this, but it is getting out of control a little and it's effecting my relationship. Thanks in advance.

You need to speak to your GP again. I would advise taking you partner with you both for support for you, but also to reinforce to the doctor the situation from 'an outsider' point of view.

The fact that your children provide you with happiness is so lovely, but they cannot be your only reason for happiness...thats a big responsibility for little people and your GP should see that!

Be strong and decide what you would like to get from the appointment before you go in. You need support, not shrugging off.

Hope you can get some support in place. Good Luck! x

Hi @User020312

I've been putting off talking to my gp knowing I was struggling for a long today.
Today I finally did, it feels a huge relief.

Is there a gp you trust to talk to or have seen consistently?

As PP said may be worth taking someone with you, it can help you be a bit firmer

I personally would be upset with the gps attitude but hopefully there is more understanding now x

Sorry meant to add, I did plan a whole 'script' but ended up just saying- I'm generally struggling and promptly burst in to tears but the gp was lovely and I didn't feel as embarrassed as I thought I would x

Write down what you are feeling, it's easier to work out your feelings that way. Ask the gp to refer you for help, though take their advice on what type it is, don't take a no for the answer or accept medication
