Aspergers excusing abusive behaviour.

Heya,
My brother (now an adult) has only just been diagnosed with suspected aspergers, my mother is now expecting me to excuse his behaviour previously (this includes but not limited too, threats on mine & family’s life, repeated physical harm to me and my mother and raising a knife to my father).

Imo, this is not something I can see myself forgiving in a long time - aspergers or not, it was scarring to me as a child and I still haven’t fully recovered, including many other reasons which I have tried to explain to my parents. As a catholic however, my mum believes I should forgive him no matter.
Any insight or experiences similar? Thank you.

That doesn’t sound like aspergers at all to me. You don’t get “diagnosed” with “suspected” Aspergers either.
Aspergers/ASD is not an excuse for that kind of hideous behaviour, ever.

Another who is perplexed by being diagnosed with ‘suspected’ Aspergers. You are either diagnosed with it or you are not.

Irrespective it sounds very odd. One of my kids, now a young adult has Aspergers and has never behaved as you have described.

By suspected do you mean a gp or some other kind of doctor thinks he has it but he's waiting for an official diagnosis? Or do you mean that your brother's gone online and says he thinks he's an aspie?
My oldest sister has just been diagnosed as having aspergers among having various mh conditions and she was absolute nightmare to the point of being terrifying, also have a catholic mum who excuses everything she does now she's been diagnosed.
Aspergers diagnosis can explain their behaviour and some slack must be given, but it is absolutely not okay to excuse your brothers behaviour. Many aspies don't behave like him and almost every single one i've met have been wonderful people, just like you and me, and would never dream of hurting anyone or acting like your brother.
I suspect he doesn't actually have it, maybe he's making it up? And if he does, he's hiding behind a label to get away with his behaviour
