Best medication for severe OCD...?

Hello,

I have had severe OCD since the age of about 7, diagnosed at 15 and it has pretty much ruined my life up to this point and affects every area of my life.

I am a member of an OCD board/forum but discussion of meds is generally discouraged so I was just wondering which meds people have found helpful for their OCD?

Thanks!

Hello,

I've only just been diagnosed and have recently been prescribed Cipramil (citalopram) which I had before when I had anxiety/stress from work years ago. I've only been taking it for a few days so can't tell you how it's doing, but it comes with a hefty warning that it can temporarily increase anxiety (for a fortnight). I'm not noticing that, but any spikes I am getting I'm finding a relief to blame on the meds rather than take seriously - lets my brain off the hook for a couple of weeks.

I was prescribed this for a month initially and to help take the edge off while I start CBT with my counsellor.

The GP said that CBT is the first thing they recommend (Time to Talk, free on the NHS) but will also prescribe something like Cipramil to help.

Good luck x

Hi op. I'm 40 and have suffered all of my life but was only diagnosed in November 2016.

I started on fluoxetine and was on them a long time but they turned me into a zombie.

I'm now on Venlafaxine and doing so much better.

Good luck Flowers

I’m on fluoxetine. They’ve helped. I’ve been taking them since about March time.

i second Fluoxetine also CBT can help rationalise any thought processes and help deal with them

My friend's son has severe OCD and improved a great deal on Sertraline.
