Alcohol and anxiety

Wondering if anyone else gets terrible bouts of anxiety symptoms after drinking alcohol?
Today is day 4 after the worst hangover in years. Mixed my drinks stupidly and I've been suffering since! I've indeed learnt my lesson.

I'm gutted 😰 it's been an awful long time since I've had anxiety this bad, it's bought it all back to me. I'm on citalopram 10mg as a crutch every other day for the past 4 years. I am worried that I've unleashed something and I'll end up back where I was.

Anyone else experience this? TIA

Yes, I've experienced it, alcohol is known to make anxiety and depression a lot worst.

Were you given the citalopram for anxiety or depression? You've mixed two drugs, one a depressant and the other an antidepressant. You should be okay but if you're not feeling better in a day or two ring the doctor who prescribed the citalopram for you to discuss it.

Thank you both. Citalopram was prescribed for post natal anxiety which I'm well and truly better from but I'm reluctant to stop taking the citalopram as I get terrible PMS.

In your experience dontforget, will this settle down soon? I'm not a big drinker at all, been away on holidays and I've had late nights, drinks in the evening for the past 2 weeks. It's clearly too much for me, plus on the last night drank far too much.

Also, is there anything I could be doing to help myself in the mean while? Sorry, not always so pathetic, normally rationale but I just panic when I feel like I'm slipping back into an anxious state.

Don't discontinue the citalopram without medical advice. Alcohol and SSRI's can indeed make your anxiety worse:

is it bad to mix antidepressants and alcohol?

You may feel more depressed or anxious. Drinking can counteract the benefits of your antidepressant medication, making your symptoms more difficult to treat. Alcohol may seem to improve your mood in the short term, but its overall effect increases symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Ring your doctors office and see if you can go to daily dosing, even if it's half the dose. That may help.

Sorry, one last thing. If you benefit from it, it's not a crutch. It's medication that helps you be at your best. Never feel shame about getting treatment.

I will do if it continues any longer Miss. than you x
I think I am just over tired and trying to catch up from being away. The kids are taxing and I'm running on empty. Who ever said going on holidays were relaxing?! 😱

Maybe some early nights would be helpful

Please do try to get some extra rest/early nights if you can. I hear you about the kids. Smile
