Yes absolutely without a doubt!

I have just finished 6 mths with a very good therapist and she really showed me the way to think.

She never seemed shocked in what I had to say, she got me to write a lot of things down and basically you start to question your own thoughts. It was like a light bulb turning on for me, I used to write pages and pages every week and then suddenly it clicked, I didnt need to and I was getting answers that i didnt get before. My councillor also turned everything that I said into a positive, she said she was just turning it around, most times I hadnt thought that there was another way!

Good luck, I hope it gives you as much success as its given me!

I am just several weeks into CBT (mine is for PTSD), and I just had a really, really hard session today. It's still early days, but I have already found some of it useful.. I agree with the comments about "homework". It is very emotional, and can leave you feeling drained, but I think it will help with more time.

As others have said, there is a lot of working through your thoughts and feelings, and learning to break the thought patterns that make you unhappy/depressed/distressed.

lizyjane · 07/06/2007 07:08

I found it very helpful. It really helped me to challenge the thought patterns that caused negative behavior. I know what weeonion meant by the homework sheets being a little bit patronising, however I went with it and was glad I had persevered.

fibernie · 07/06/2007 07:49

I found CBT extremely helpful, and a really sensible approach. I still use some of the techniques I learned.

This book Depression is written from a CBT standpoint. It was recommended to me when I suffered from PND and I found it really easy to read and helpful.

fibernie · 07/06/2007 07:50

Sorry, the book is called Overcoming Depression by Paul Gilbert

Cascara · 07/06/2007 08:29

A close friend found it successful in the treatment of her very bad depression. Sorry I can't give you more depth.

I have also used cbt techniques very successfully for my obsessions.

Beauregard · 07/06/2007 21:42

Thanks
I do hope that it 'works' for me.

Yes, I agree with Naughty, it was like turning on a light. The important thing to remember is it can also protect against further problems.

It is hard work, challenging every single negative or automatic thought( I have so many!!), but it does help.

I bought a book called "the feeling good handbook" which is the one recommended by MIND. It is like a workbook, and is really helpful.

Eg, I discovered most of my problems were to do with"Fortune telling", ie thinking, this will happen, and then this etc, when in fact no one knows what will happen!

Hope this helps
