How do you know when you've had enough counselling?

I've been going to counselling for about 6 months now. It was initially weekly and now fortnightly because I'm doing a lot better.

This is the 4th time I've had counselling but the first time I really feel we've got to the root cause of my depression. I'm feeling more stable, in control and happier than I have in my entire adult life.

I feel like I won't need counselling for much longer, but I'm wary of stopping because it was too early the other times and lead to worse problems.

So how do you know it's the right time?

A complicating factor is that my husband has arranged flexible working with his company so I can go to my appointments while he is home with the children (I'm a SAHM) and this is due to end in soon, although there is possibly scope to extend it if necessary.

I know people who have been for a few months to a few years. I think if you feel you have less to talk about or have become more aware of behaviours that you had sought to change you might be nearly ready but it's very personal so if you find it helps and can afford the tome and money why not continue until you know you're ready to stop.

Wean yourself off. Drop to 2 weekly then 3 weekly etc

OhHoly I think I'm nearly there. I think I'm mostly afraid of not having that safety net (and I'll miss her when I'm done).

Dragonade Good idea, thanks.

Even once you have left, you can go back.

This is a good topic to discuss with your counsellor, btw.

MeanTangerine Thanks, I'll bring it up next session.
