Mirtazipine - useful for OCD?

Posted before about difficulties with side effects with the med I was on for 8 years on and off (clomipramine).

So after talking today with cpn and GP have decided to try mirtazipine instead.

Does it work for OCD? Main thing I liked with the clomipramine was it did work really well on the OCD.

I'm also a bit worried about those saying it can be 'zombiefying'

Does that wear off?

Not sure about its effect on OCD, but it's a nightmare for causing significant weight gain. Some people find that the benefits outweigh that, but many do not.

I don't care about weight gain I can cope with that.

I can't carry on feeling as I am at the moment. Basically imprisoned in my bedroom.

From what I've read the weight gain/increased appetite is a temporary thing plus my anxiety is making me have no appetite at the moment anyway. Yesterday was first time I had eaten since Friday.

I'm more concerned I need it to work on the OCD and about the drowsiness.

Sorry meant to say thank you very much for replying. Seems this section doesn't get much traffic

It makes me sleep very well and deeply (which is a plus for me) so I do feel quite drowsy on waking for a while but it doesn’t last long.

OCDpanic · 03/05/2018 22:20

Thanks jimjam. The drowsiness scares me. But my sleep is horrendous so it would be good to sleep well.

Sorry what dose are you on?

I felt very drowsy the first couple of times I took it but my body soon adjusted and I really enjoyed sleeping heavily while I was on it.
I felt a bit numbed in general though which was ok but couldn’t stand the weight gain.

I’m on 30mg at the moment, I have been on 45mg previously, no noticeable difference although I have heard the sedative effect is greater at the lower doses.

OCDPanic · 04/05/2018 13:19

I think it's a low dose I've been given. I'm waiting on delivery now. Very nervous about this.

How significant was the weight gain?

I put on about a stone. Came off Mirt, lost the weight. Went back on Mirt, put back on about 10 pounds, now trying to lose it again whilst still taking the Mirtazapine, 3lb down so far, 7 to go! I think if you’re aware it’s going to increase your appetite you can at least be prepared. No one warned me

Jimjam68 · 04/05/2018 20:20

If your sleep is bad at the moment you will really welcome the improved sleep it gives you. Really I cope with everything so much better after a good nights sleep. It’s worth a bit of drowsiness, and I can honestly say I don’t feel like a zombie and not do I feel numb. It just takes the edge of my anxiety. Good luck

Thank you. I'm dreading and looking forward to it if that makes sense?

I can be OK re food when necessary plus if I'm actually sleeping I won't be awake to eat.
