Mertazapine side effects

I have recently been weaned off sertraline (200mg) and had it replaced with mertazapine and quetiopine (sp?).

I've been reading up on the side effects of these and it seems weight gain is a very common side effect.

I have been diagnosed as having anxiety/depression and ednos.

The pills are making me want to eat, specifically carbs, but I don't want to eat ergo I am purging more than I would normally.

I have a review on Friday with my psychiatrist, but in the mean time, does anyone have any tips/advice as to how I can curb the desire to want to eat?

I'm aware it's an unhealthy life choice but it's one too many things to 'deal with' right now so I'm just focusing on the anxiety & low mood side of my 'issues' (doctors agree). I'm just struggling with the physical effects of more frequent purging and scared I'm going to do some serious damage so I need to not eat (or at least not eat as much as my body wants me to!) Smile

I’m on those 2 and other pills as well. The hungry thing wears off. I read a study that said you do actually need carbs for anti Ds to work, so try not to starve yourself. I’ve had ED’s (including recent bout of anorexia) so appreciate it’s hard. This is what I’ve found useful to stop the eating all the time. It seems quite easy written down, but if you have an ED it’s a bit harder.

Eat a regular balanced diet, with 3 proper planned meals and some snacks too. I try and make sure I’ve got protein, carbs and fruit/veg at each meal, as well as healthy fats. I don’t tend to eat carbs just by themselves...having protein and veg at the same time makes it just about impossible to eat too much of them. I try to minimise sugar and alcohol and they seem to be the things that set off the hunger. I mainly eat fruit/Veg for snacks, and try and eat whole grain stuff where possible, and lots of veg/pulses etc. I only eat bread once a day if it all as I can eat dough for Britain. I also don’t eat late at night...if I have anything it’s a carrot or a piece of fruit...I usually have a milky drink though as that seems to curb any cravings.

If you plan your meals out, then generally it’s meant to make purging less likely...not eating isn’t a good option, and won’t do your MH or your body any good.

I have been on metrazapine for about 2 weeks. I was originally on Lafrapramine for a few years but recently had a major anxiety breakdown. My GP originally swapped me to sertraline but it really disagreed with me so changed to Metrazapine. My GP warned me about the weight gain side effects, particularly as I am already overweight and have T2 diabetes. I am now following a No carb (or low carb) high fat diet but keeping the fat at

Here is the guide sheet my GP gave me.

Mertazapine side effects

I'm two and half weeks into taking Mirtazapine now. Hungry, craving crabs, but mostly managing to resist lots of binges and purges.

The only other side effect that is knocking me sideways are nightmares. I've always had lots of dreams and often nigthmares, so I didn't really connect it first, and thought nothing of it, but it's starting to seem too much for a coincidence. I'm sleeping quite well with the meds, but my nights are filled with extremely vivid and disturbing dreams. Every single time I fall asleep - even if it's just a ten minute nap. I'm waking up well rested but feeling disgusted...

I've been taking Mirtazapine for two years, and can honestly say that the weight gain was minimal (6 pounds or so) for me. I'm actually on a diet and have lost a stone in the last two months, so weight gain is by no means a given.

Does anyone on Mirtazapine who had suffered sexual side effects on SSRIs find they went away Mirtazapine, or did thy continue?

Ine1301 · 02/05/2018 23:20

Willwork - yes! On Sertraline I completely lost interest in sex but now on Mirtrazapine & all is back in working order again Smile

Thanks for replies.
I had an appointment with my psychiatrist the other day. He's decided to change my meds to agomelatine..he said they are one of the few anti-d's with very few side effects (including the appetite increase) but still help induce sleep. (I have insomnia on top of everything else..fun!)
I wasn't handling the carb cravings well at all, purging up to 4 times a day and was increasingly anxious, which defied the point of the meds in the first place.
Hopefully this will be the last switch...my poor body is struggling with the constant change in pills!!

A family member has just gone onto to Mirtazapine last week and interestingly, has not felt any sedating effect, nor appetite increase in the first week.

I asked to check the box to make sure!

ElephantsCanFly · 07/05/2018 14:15

WillWork, that's interesting esp as they are 2 of the most common side effects. Just proves that one size doesn't fit all I guess.
