Mirtazapine and weight gain?

Hello,

I have been prescribed mirazapine to help with my depression and anxiety. One of the reasons the GP prescribed this one is because of my difficulty sleeping.

I've been reading the side effects and saw one was weight gain.

I looked it up on the internet and lots of people have experienced weight gain on it and there are some comments such as no matter what they do (watch what they eat etc) it doesn't stop the weight gain.

I know if I gain weight I will feel even worse and become very down about it.

Has anyone experienced this drug? If so, what was your experience on it?

Thank you

I have been on Mirtazapine for anxiety for around 3 years and have put on just over a stone. 12 months ago I came off it slowly because of the weight gain and to see if I could cope without it. The weight dropped off me (I was dieting as well by the way), and I noticed how less hungry I was, I had got so used to being hungry all the time), however i did not cope well without the Mirtazapine and I love how well I sleep on it. So I went back on it and have put most of the weight back on. I am now dieting again whilst on Mirtazapine to see if it is possible to lose weight whilst taking it. I know this will involve consuming only around 1000 calories a day but I’m going to try and see if I can be more disciplined with food, as I’m unwilling to give up my good nights sleep, particularly as I am now peri menopausal and see many friends suffering with disturbed sleep. If I sleep well I cope so much better with everything else, but the extra weight does really bother me.

I've been on Mirtazapine since about November 2016. Just before starting it I'd lost over 3st between jan-nov by using MPF. I was obviously hesitant to try it because of the weight gain but I haven't gained any of it back but I don't binge on loads of stuff like I used to before losing the weight.
The first few days I was tired during the day but that soon wore off and now I just have better nights sleep. I was hungrier than usual for the first 3-4 weeks but I realised that it was just the tablets so I tried not to binge too much. Ever since I've been totally fine, just sleep better and only feel extra hungry a couple of days a month but that's usually round TOTM.

I used to keep my weight in check with MFP, but I'm currently "working on" my ED with my therapist, and calorie counting and fasting are out. It's a surprisingly hard habit to lose!

On a positive side, I've now had several days without The Hunger, despite taking Mirtazapine. Might have been the hot weather, as I'm never as hungry when it's hot. I also weighed myself this morning, and haven't gained. My mood's been better than in ages, so it's a relief to feel I can keep taking this, at least for now.
