hi,i have just been prescibed this drug.i have been on prozac since september last year (it was for AND) but it had stopped working.i have tried loads of different ad's in the past and the only one that made a real difference was seroxat, back in 1999 ,when i had PND after having dd1.

i cant really remember much about it,only that i did start to feel brighter after a couple of weeks, and it is in my medical records that i reported an improvement in mood with this drug, but tbh most of dd1's first year is a blur as i was very depressed and also in an abusive relationship.

i have been very down these past few weeks(my baby is 9 weeks old now)and i knew i needed something else, and i agreed to give seroxat a go.

what im looking for, hopefully, are positive experiences of this drug, cos im a bit worried about taking it after all the bad press its recieved.

Without exaggerating, it's given me my life back. I've been taking it for several years and don't envisage stopping any time soon. I have only ever taken 20mgs per day which is the lowest prescribed dose. When I first started taking it, I felt better after three weeks and much better after six, which is apparently typical. There has indeed been a lot of bad press but do remember that literally millions of people worldwide take seroxat/other SSRIs so the actual numbers of cases which have gone wrong represent a miniscule proportion of the total numbers of users.

thanks

the way i looked at it was that ive been on prozac without any problems and thats also received bad press in the past.

i just hope its going to help as ive hit rock bottom again

I was on seroxat about 10 years ago again very low dose but my god what an impact, very positive, and got my life back

Pixiefish · 12/05/2007 20:14

I've been on it- years ago- twas good. Came off it cold turkey though and that was bad- should have done it more gradually

divastrop · 12/05/2007 20:33

thanks-my gp did warn me about the possible withdrawal effects.i cant even remember coming off it last time, but it was a very difficult period in my life and ive blanked alot of the memories.

did anybody find it caused weight gain?my dp thinks worrying about that is petty but ive still got 1.5 stone of pregnancy weight to shift and my weight does influence how i feel in myself.

I've been on Seroxat since November '06. Has worked brilliantly for me - before, i was at the point of thinking DD better off without me, couldn't get out of bed etc. Only side effect i've had is slight sleeping problems, but they got better with a little time and a few Kalms!! Again, only on 20mgs a day.

Good luck with them xx

caspercat · 12/05/2007 20:36

Haven't noticed weight gain BTW, but was aware it was a side effect, so made sure i ate healthily(ish) and went to the gym as often as i could (both not easy i know, but once i was feeling better seemed easier).

HTH

Weight gain hasn't been a problem for me, but when I feel better mentally I find it much easier to eat well and get some exercise. I hope it works for you - if it doesn't, remember that there are lots of different SSRIs and your GP will help you find the one that works for you. Good luck and let us know how you go.

took it several years ago for about 18 months, it worked very well. felt completely lethargic/had no appetite first few days. also found that if I didn't take it at the same time each day I would feel slightly dizzy. Had no trouble coming off it (did it fairly gradually). I didn't notice any weight gain. I think with SSRIs weight gain tends to be due to increased appetite - so as long as you snack healthily if you do get the munchies, yu should be able to get a handle on it.

thais · 20/05/2007 23:42

I've been on it for a very long time (8 years).
It's great stuff, it has sorted me out. However, I have tried to come off it a few times but I failed.
I started with 5 mg per day, then went up to 10mg and finally 20mg. When back to 10mg per day a few months before I got pregnant and then wanted to stop but GP didn't advise it due to all the hormonal changes in early pregnancy. When my daughter was born I went down to 10mg every other day and I am fine on this dose. However, my GP insists on taking it every day to avoid PD.

Hi Diva,

I came off Seroxat last July and recently went back on it after suffering panic attacks and depression. The recent problems have resulted from a family incident so aren't related to me being off seroxat. I cut down very slowly 1mg at a time and it did take a while but I did come off seroxat and I felt fine. Take while you need it and when you feel ready cut down slowly and you should be fine.

It did cause me to gain about 3st as I was hungry all the time, this time around i'm keeping my weight in check as I've now lost the weight I gained.

About 5 years ago I took Seroxat for about a year, then switched to Prozac for a few months before coming off ADs altogether. I was off work for 6 months, then back at work but still taking ADs. Seroxat made me very sleepy and I had no appetite at all at first, but it did help my mood and def. helped my anxiety to get better. I had no problems at all coming off it.

I wasn't sure whether to post or not. I lost my best friend to suicide due to side effects of seroxat. She broke her pelvis giving birth to her second child, went through a lot of surgery, time in a wheelchair etc so was very depressed. Seeing the name of it sends shivers down my spine.

Beauregard · 25/05/2007 23:32

When i was on Seroxat it worked wonders for me.

divastrop · 25/05/2007 23:42

oh ffs-how many more old threads is this person going to drag up

i was only on the seroxat for 6 days in the end as i couldnt tolerate the drowsiness(randomly falling asleep when you have a 17 month old and a 10 week old is not safe).am now back on prozac, which has never caused me any problems.

hi divastrop,
ive been on seroxat for about 8 yrs - it has been wonderful. Im still myself but it takes the edge off the low times. Absolutely no side effects, but the couple of times i have tried coming off it, and whenever i run out because i havent bothered/feel too sad to go to the docs, the withdrawal has been horrible. Electric shock feelings. yuk. you really need a doctor who knows about coming off them as i think you can get it in a liquid form for giving yourself tiny decreases in dosage. Good luck, and congrats on your baby!
