Prozac, antipsychotics, suicidal thoughts . Looking for an insight into what is happening here

A family member has been admitted to hospital and sectioned and I don't know how it got to this stage.

She was depressed and prescribed Prozac by the GP. There followed a mega-quick decline in her mental health over a period of a few weeks, the introduction of sedatives and anti-psychotics and now has resulted in her being sectioned.

Now I understand that Prozac has well-documented side-effects of suicidal thoughts so when she presented with them (having not had them whilst depressed) why did they not just stop the Prozac and try something else? They just seem to be increasing her meds and adding new ones on top.

I'm hoping someone has some sort of insight into the drugs used, why this is happening and where this is heading. I mean, are they trying to find a balance of meds to enable her to function normally again? Will the suicidal feelings remain whilst on these meds or will they go?

Honestly this is heartbreaking to watch and to see her like this

This woman wrote a whole book about her experience. She was fine, a bit down from a divorce, given an SSRI which then made her lose touch with reality and she wasn't believed that that was the cause so she lost a couple of years of her life to anti psychotic medication.
It sounds eerily like what is happening to your relative.

The only time in my life that I've seriously considered suicide was a couple of days after I started taking Prozac. I won't say here what my thoughts were but it frightened the life out of me. I stopped taking it and I was OK again.

MyBrilliantDisguise that must have been so scary for you. I'm glad that you were ok after stopping them.

Do you mind me asking if you decided to stop taking them or the medical professionals decided?

I just can't get my head round that they're increasing and adding to my relatives meds. Why didn't they try taking her off the Prozac first to see if the intrusive thoughts stopped?

The thing was that I'd read about this with Prozac in particular so I recognised it immediately when it happened to me. I stopped taking it, told my doctor a few days later and asked for something else. He gave me Seroxat (not sure whether that's prescribed now) - coming off that was the most awful experience.

Oddly enough, when I realised my husband (at the time) had been having an affair for years, I stopped the medication and my depression miraculously stopped. Sometimes, once you know your own life and your own history, you don't need meds. Other times, people do, I know.
