Fluoxetine for teenager

Ds2 is 17. He's had depression for at least a year. Been to Camhs and had CBT in a group.

Ds2 had a few weeks of feeling better whilst doing the ncs course. His mood can sometimes be ok but mostly he's depressed.

Today he saw a psychiatrist who prescribed fluoxetine to try in liquid form as ds2 doesn't take tablets.

Has anyone had experience of a teenager taking this? Did it help?

Dr said it'll take 6 weeks to work. He's seeing ds2 again in 6 weeks.

i was put on it at 15, noticed no difference regardless of dose, but my dad swears he saw a difference.

freakin I’d come on this board to post the exact same question! Ds2 is 17 and has gone rapidly downhill over the last few months. He’s now effectively dropped out of school and hasn’t left the house for a month - he spends most of the time in bed, sometimes asleep but more often staring at the wall. CAMHS have so far not been much help and he’s almost at the cut-off point anyway. Our GP has now prescribed fluoxetine on the instructions of the CAMHS psychiatrist and he started yesterday. He’s taking the liquid as he gags on tablets however small they are. I’m hoping this will give him enough of a mood boost to get him functioning again. Fingers crossed it works for your boy too and it’s encouraging to read the positive experiences too.

I really hope fluoxetine works for him. Was he going to college?

My heart goes out to you both.

Does your ds have any friends?

My 18 yo found it made him exhausted and sleepy. He made some improvements on it but after a while was switched to another drug which has worked better for him and had less in the way of side effects. He didn't have the suicidal thoughts (as far as anyone can ever know....)

How's everyone else's dcs?

Ds2 is a lot happier. He's taking meds ok. I just wish he could stay on the low dosage.

I thought I'd update as it's been a while.

Ds2 is now on capsules and 20mg. Even before the dosage change his confidence had grown. He's managed to travel by train alone on a split journey. He's more talkative. Laughing. He asks how I am! Even wants to know what to get me for Christmas. Xmas Smile

He's been put forward for 1 to 1 CBT. He'll see his psychiatrist in a couple of months.

He's just passed a test a college today which is good. He got a good report from their recently.

I hope everyone elses dcs are doing Ok?
