Anyone taken Pregabalin?

GP has just prescribed 2 x 25mg Pregabalin for GAD - I've also just started CBT but have had awful physical as well as psychological symptoms of anxiety over the last week and not able to take anything in re therapy, even a simple mindfulness exercise
Ended up at GP in despair at not sleeping and constant anxiety and got low dose Zopiclone for sleeping and low dose diazepam for the anxiety to take as and when needed. She was really positive about Pregabalin as a short-medium term med based on conferences and good response from another patient, but I'm really conflicted about whether to start it

I've never taken meds before and my health anxiety has gone into overdrive about side effects, having obviously gone and read up too much about this
On one hand I want to try it to see if it lessens anxiety enough to get the most out of CBT
On the other hand I'm worried about side effects - both the scary ones like blurred vision, possibility of seizures, dizziness, etc but also the ones like weight gain, water retention, constipation. I've worked really hard to get to a weight I'm happy with over the last few years, though watching what I eat and exercising and it would be tough and hard on my self esteem to deal with significant weight gain as well as the anxiety. And then there's concern about the withdrawal process if I don't get on with taking it

I know 2 x 2mg is a low dose and I guess less likely to result in either benefits or significant side effects but I'd love to hear about any experiences and especially any advice about side effects/weight gain/effectiveness at low doses

I take pregbalin for chronic pain at 2x 100mg and it does make me feel a bit more hungry, but hasn't made me put on weight. I don't have any side effects, and when I've been rubbish and forgotten to get a new prescription, I haven't had withdrawl problems

I have just started to take it as well. I was desperate for something after months of crippling panic attacks. It is still really early days but they do seem to be taking the edge off and giving me some respite.

Thanks CMOTDibbler, that's encouraging. When did you start taking it Marshmallow? Do you mind me asking what dose and whether you've had side effects?

I started taking it on Thursday. I started on 75 morning and evening but upped it to three times a day yesterday. I was getting some break through anxiety. I still felt a little panicky on waking but not nearly as bad as usual - some mornings I find it hard to believe I’m not dying. I don’t know what the answer is long term but in the short term I am getting some relief. Not experienced any side effects as yet that I am aware of.

I started a thread about pregabalin a couple of weeks ago, but didn't get any replies.

Anyway, I started taking 25mg twice a day just over a week ago. For anxiety. I also take 40mg of fluoxetine daily.

I did have some side effects for a few days - spacey, tired, dizzy and loss of appetite, but those have died down now. Not sure whether anything's helping with my issues, but I'm getting help in other ways as well.

I take 450mg a day for neuropathic pain (3x 150mg). I also have an anxiety disorder and IBS, since taking it I've managed to reduced my dose of sertraline (which gave me far more side effects) & I've noticed a reduction in IBS issues.

No real side effects - when I first started taking it I got the tipsy euphoric feeling which was brilliant (!) but sadly only lasted a couple of days.

These replies have made me feel less scared about starting it, and good to know that there are others quite new to taking it for anxiety, though also really helpful to hear from those of you taking it for other reasons.
My GP has been brilliant and understanding but keen for me to try this and I know I need to at least give it a go. I have just started CBT so I think the aim would be to try to get me feeling calmer and more receptive to getting what I can out of the therapy and hopefully not be taking it long term

I've just done my usual unhelpful thing of reading all the negative and scary stories about side effects.

I need to steel myself to start it tonight Confused

What helped me was working out a good time to start the meds.
ie not just when the doc prescribed them, but on a day I decided. I had a half marathon coming up and didn't want side effects to effect my performance, so I agreed with myself that I would start the evening after the race.

It's just a small way of making me feel in control of things.

Good luck OP.

Thank you Brave - the control element does feel important. Have you felt hungrier since taking it? Are you feeling able to exercise as usual?

I have an eating disorder so I can't answer your first question (I have my own thread in Eating Disorders).

Yes, I am exercising as normal (too much according to 'them').

Meh....we'll get there, eh?!

spacechimp · 03/10/2017 12:04

Sorry Brave if that was a insensitive question. Thanks for your help - and good luck to you, too

That's OK, you weren't to know and we are strangers on the internet!
Easy to be open.

Thank you
