I was wondering if any one could help with tips on how they control their depression and anxiety. I suffer so bad, especially of late but I hate the idea of putting anything into my body (medication wise) I go through weeks of just being so down and snappy and emotional and tired, I panic about anything. I have more ups, then downs and it's starting to get to me and cause problems between me and my partner. Any tips or information that you can pass onto me I'd be eternally grateful thank you

Hi, that sounds really tough. I can recommend an approach called Human Givens, which is very practical and deals with the here and now - have a look at their website - there's a lot of information about depression and anxiety.

Sometimes, having an understanding listener can help too and that's something the Samaritans are good at - talking to or emailing them can give you a bit of breathing space to get your head straight. They have a free phone number now - all on their website.

It's not easy - I struggle too. I know I should go out for some fresh air right now and, instead, I'm on Mumsnet :)

Sometimes you do need medication. You wouldn't tell a diabetic it's wrong to use insulin.
Getting out every day. Planning activities. Exercise. Making sure I do something each day I enjoy. Keeping vaguely on top of the house and jobs. They all help me.
Mindfulness is supposed to be good.

The first time I had depression I resisted medication, I really regret not going onto it earlier now. It saved my life. It wasn't for ever it just got me through the bad patch whilst I had councelling to deal with the underlying issues.

Exercise, meditation and mindfulness help, but I've found medication to be vital at times.
