i went to see my GP who referred me to the practice counsellor, who in turn found my psychotherapist. I know it sounds like a bit of a faff, but it was the best route for me, esp as I got a free consultation. Good luck

the best way is personal recommendation....

your therapist should be either BACP or UKCP registered or both. The BACP website (bac.co.uk i think) has a find a therapist section which is useful for finding people that are local and finding out about their specialities.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy has good results with symptom management of phobias and anxiety disorders. However, if it transpires that there is underlying stuff you would be better off with longer term therapy.

Really really shop around, you have to feel right with a therapist. no good if there isn't a fit or click.

If you are london based i would be happy to recommend people to you (I'm in my final year of training, and know some excellent therapists) if you CAT me.

the only trouble with going through your GP is that in most cases the only options available will be short term.

Agree with sophable. You need to meet a few and see if they are right for you - most will offer an assessment appointment and it is just as much about you assessing them to see if you click with them - as them assessing you.

I only said to go through the GP to get an onward referral - I certainly didn't find the help offered was short term, and what if you don't know anyone who uses a therapist?

sunnyjim · 29/03/2007 19:36

GP did refer me to what passes for therapy in the NHS. They said they couldn't help me and couldn't give me any onward referals.

I'm not in London - anyone know of any reputable people in the North or Yorkshire?

snipers, I'm glad that you found gp referral constructive...many people don't though....and financial considerations are paramount in the nhs, and this has a poor impact on what can be offerred imo (not always, obviously).

sunnyjim, you could do worse than look out a good psychotherapy course and email a tutor explaining what you are looking for and that you are after an experienced therapist rather than a trainee....a bacp/ukcp accredited therapist will have had at least 4 1/2 years training, have been in therapy themselves, and will adhere to a code of ethics that will protect you....

I'll ask around, some of my tutors may know of people...in your area.

I hope you succeed in finding someone that is right for you..if you do it will be worth it.

there must be someone that has had great therapy in yorks. on mn!!! come one guys!!!
