Mirtazapine experiences?

After feeling like I had depression or anxiety for a long time, I went to the doctor today and was diagnosed with both. I have difficulty falling asleep, so she prescribed Mirtazapine which is meant to be taken at night.

Now I'm out of the doctor I've googled the drug and it sounds like some serious stuff! Most of the reports seem to be around bad side-effects like violent dreams, hallucinations and inclinations to self-harm; things I could really do without...

I know that I'm not going to get anywhere without at least trying this drug, but I was hoping to hear of any positive experiences with it? Has Mirtazapine proven useful to anyone, are the side-effects inevitable?

Thanks!

I felt very drowsy at first but I've been on it almost a year and honestly it saved my life. I've had a medication review and it's been put on monthly repeat for another year for me, side effects lists are always scary, but I'm glad I took it, I felt noticeably better after a month on it.

I'm glad to hear that it has helped people long term I'm definitely going to stick with it and just keep an eye on my weight.

I had to stop mine as was feeling very woozy when ever I did any thinking , tearful , anxiety.
Went to docs and have been put on Prozac.
Praying this is better .
Hate feeling like this .
Good health to those who the meds agreed with x

I have just started this and finding it very sedating, could sleep 24/7 also hungrier, but seeing as I wasn't eating for days on end probably a good thing.

Im going to stick with it for awhile, I have found in the past that the more stimulating ssri's have done nothing for me. Hopefully the increased sleep and routine will help the most (insomniac)

Also the vivid dreams have been super crazy, but more in a wtf way than a scary way

Trazodone is an alternative. Sleep inducing effects but weight gain isn't a major side effect

I've been using it for almost a month now, and the grogginess and insatiable hunger has gone. Because I'm feeling better from taking it I've taken up running, so hopefully I'll end up losing weight on it!

The dreams are vivid and strange, but I've found as long as I think nice calm thoughts as I'm falling asleep they aren't unpleasant. If I don't get into a calm headspace I end up dreaming of haunted dolls and such, ugh.

Overall it's really helping me already and I'm only taking 15mg. I expect I may need to increase to 30mg at some point but for now this is making me feel 'normal' for the first time in years.

I gained 60 pounds.. or more. It not only effects your appetite but it has an effect on your insulin . I have always been an extremely thin person , and dropped all of it within two or three months of coming off. The weight gain was extreme in my case and just not worth it.

I had violent outbursts of temper where I'd almost black out and lose it.

I couldn't wake up until 11 am or so, my eyes would be stinging and I'd feel like vomiting all day if I didn't sleep the morning away.

The only pros was that it didn't affect my sex drive and it helped with anxiety.
