Citalopram success stories?

Hi, I just started on citalopram 20mg three days ago. I feel fine, my mood seems to have improved slightly already. I just wondered if anyone has taken citalopram and it has recovered you from depression? Thanks in advance

I used citalopram for 2 years - it definitely helped me but doesn't actually start working straight away! It builds up gradually in your system. I came off it 18 months ago.

I used it for a long time. It totally changed my life. I loved it and credit it for giving me my life back. Unfortunately after about 5 years I had to come off it due to accumulated side effects. But I'm someone who needs regular SSRIs.
Are you looking for a short term dose to cure depression permanently or a drug to stay on long term to ease symptoms of severe ongoing mental health problems?

It was my medication for just over a year, I can't say that by itself has helped me recover but it got me in a stable frame of mind so I could function enough to find other ways in which to help me recover, iyswim. I had to go back to basics, make sure I was sleeping well, eating the right things, seeking support, knowing when to say no I can't or it's a bad day. It has been a long process of self investment but I'm doing a lot better and am actually loving life which is something I felt was never going to happen again. Wishing you well on your recovery, just take it day by day.

Thanks for the replies. Millifiori I'm looking for a long term answer to my problems. I've been depressed for years, apart from when I was on duloxetine. But they took me off that due to the fact it made me hypomanic. I loved duloxetine. I'm hoping this combination of citalopram and mirtazapine helps me recover. I've also just had my antipsychotic changed to aripiprazole. I've tried it before but it made me more anxious but the psychiatrist said it should pass within a couple of weeks. He gave me some diazepam to use to help with the anxiety. I haven't had to use one this morning though which is good.

Well, for a long term solution I rated it really highly. I love dit. It made me calm and happy and able to live a full life. It didn't block emotions like some SSRIs do. But it did massively slow down my system - I put on loads of weight and ended up sleeping 16 hours a day so had to come off it. But that was a slow accummulation of a side effect and tbh 'd not hesitate to use it again because it gave me back a life that had been lost to severe depression.

That's great that you liked citalopram and that it gave you back your life. I'm on day 8 now, I would say that my mood gets a tiny bit better every day now. Not suffering from any side effects thankfully.

Been on it over a year. Still have bad days but not as bad as they were pre Cit. When I'm really bad I take a diazepam ( 5mg ) too. Put on lots of weight though and some days I have zero energy ( don't know if it's related to Cit though......)

It worked for me, but don't forget that the pills will not cure you.

For me, ad a metaphor, what they did was put a fixed bottom on the bottomless well I was facing down. That gave me the strength to push back up off the bottom and swim back up. Eventually. It took time and a lot of hard bloody work, but I did get there in the end.

I can work, have a relationship and raise my son thanks to it. GPs have always implied that I ought to come off it at some point but my present one seems to be ok with me staying on it indefinitely while I don't have side effects. Sends my husband loopy though! He is better on fluoxetine.
