To tell work about anxiety & depression?

I'm suffering with anxiety disorders & depression and today I feel so low I'm not even sure how I'm going to get myself to work.

I'm wondering if I should tell work how I feel or if it will go against me?

In theory you should be able to because it's an illness, but I think it very much depends upon how decent your company is.
Do you want to give a bit more info?Flowers

My boss can be unpredictable but I was hoping if I tell her or I'm feeling she might be a bit more understanding.
I've had 3 failed IVF cycles this year and I think it's taken its toll on me, funding it very difficult to function at the moment and I'm overly worrying about every little thing.
Getting out of bed in a morning is a challenge in itself, I just feel so incredibly low at the moment

Oh lovely, that sounds awful,no wonder you're ill.Was she aware that you've been having IVF?
What do you mean about being unpredictable?

Isobelocean · 12/12/2016 07:20

She doesn't know about the IVF, we have kept it all secret because of all the added pressure.

My boss is unpredictable with her moods, so one day she will act like everyone's best friend then the next day she will talk to me like I'm stupid (always in front of others!)

Oh no she sounds awful.Do you have an HR department you can go thru or does everything have to be done through her?
I'm self employed(tho do some p/t work as well)so don't have this added pressure to my illness iyswim.

Isobelocean · 12/12/2016 07:37

The HR department isn't much better to be honest, often I hear things I shouldn't because they like gossiping in corridors!
I just feel a bit lost, maybe I'm better not saying anything but I'm not sure how long I can pretend to put a brave face on for

Right you work to live not live to work? I know that for many probably your boss it's the latter!
Take the first step & call in sick(which you are)I don't know about where you live but we have norovirus in our neck of the woods atm,ok so it's a white lie but so what it sounds legit & will buy you some time.
Next get an emergency GP appointment for today,it can be done if you stress the need of the urgency to the receptionist.
GP will assess you & then decide on the best course of action for you.If you're signed off sick there's nothing that they can do about it.All you're required to do legally is to keep work informed of how things are going and to work on getting back into the workplace.
How is your DP/H coping with all this?

Be careful. It very much depends on your field. I work in a competitive, professional environment which I find intensely rewarding buy sometimes highly stressful. At the very start of my career, when I was applying for my first FT position, someone who acted as a mentor to me took me aside and told me off the record never to reveal mental health issues. If you are in trouble, say you have the flu. This is all against 'official policy' and procedures and so on, but jobs are precarious and competitive. In my experience, his advice has been spot on.
