Been off work because of PND for a couple of months now. Yesterday I spoke to an HR person at work, who basically told me that I wouldn't have PND if I got out more. I was so angry I couldn't speak. Is it really that simple?

no - they were misguided but gettin out for walks can help reduce symptoms of depression

colditz · 20/01/2007 15:31

Actually getting out a lot is known to ease the symptoms of PND.

PinkTulips · 20/01/2007 15:33

she'd no right to comment but fresh air and excercise can easer depression for some people

drosophila · 20/01/2007 15:36

It's simply not her place to comment. I have worked in HR and there should be set procedures to deal with any long term sick leave and it does NOT involve unqualified people giving their opinion. Does your employer have an occupational health contract?

Thing is that yes getting our does help with all depression but depression also often mean you find it hard to motivate yourself.

RevelKina · 20/01/2007 15:43

could not agree more drosophila; it's so difficult to get out of the pnd head space.

I'm in the middle of nowhere literally- russia, my son is six months, I don't speak a lick of russian, and I'm at the point where I almost don't want to-

not to mention he is a schmuck.

Thing is, most days, going out is the last thing I feel like doing. I just assumed that was part of the illness, not the cause of it. I know it's a vicious circle, and I do try really hard to get out most days, for the sake of DD if nothing else, but there was an implication that I'm faking it which is what upset me.

It is true, but it's not for her to say so.
Staying at home with a young baby is a recipe for feeling blue - if you drag yourself out you'll start to feel a lot better.
Doesn't sound as though going back to work would help, though!

Lizalu · 20/01/2007 15:51

If all PND and depression could be cured by getting out more what a wonderful world it would be. No more ads, no need for counselling. Like everyone has said getting out does help with the symptoms but getting rid of it altogether!!

Actually I'm not suprised you're fuming - it makes me mad that people have to put up with that kind of rubbish. It's like been told to pull yourself together and get on with it - not at all helpful.
