I'm now off prozac after a year but I can feel myself sliding again but desperately don't want to go back onto meds. I'm going to exercise regularly but seem to remember there are specific foods like oily fish which are known to help. Any tips welcome

I found thisHope it helps

I read somewhere that a vitamin B supplement can help - not sure if it's true, but I know it can be useful for PMS, so may help a bit with depression.

Try www.radiantrecovery.com and Potatoes not Prozac book.

Sorry LGJ that link took me to katymac's thread about the nursery. Looked through it for diet info but to no avail!

Try again.

Sorry about that, was sending to a friend who was thinking about opening a nursery in Ireland.

I havent ever been properly depressed but my SIL has been hospitalised several times in her darkest moments so I hope it is ok for me to comment ?

I have heard quite a compelling theory that because our brains work off fat that you need to be vigilant about eating enough. So a low calorie/fat diet is bad news. In fact chips and chocolate are 'health foods' for people inclined towards depression.

If you need medication please use it. A little bit now might save you having to use a lot later on .

Why don't you want to go back on meds N?

madmarchhare · 07/01/2007 19:07

As the link below says, avoiding caffiene and alcohol are going to help too.

I felt a huge improvement in my mood and energy levels after dropping caffiene.

lulumama · 07/01/2007 19:13

second the recommendation about potatos not prozac......it is a good book.

madmarchhare · 07/01/2007 19:15

caffine and refined sugar are often key culprits. I was thinking today I should give up caffine, but am very hooked.

DimpledThighs · 07/01/2007 19:33

essential fats as well.

northender · 07/01/2007 20:13

Thanks so much everyone. I want to avoid going back on meds if I can because I feel sure that I could make a real difference through diet and exercise. Fortunately the depression I have suffered from is relatively mild I think. The potatoes not prozac book I will order from the library tomorrow, Vit B supplement/brewers yeast sound like a good shout and plenty of mackerel cabbage and walnut stir fry! Thanks LGJ for redoing the link!
