Citalopram Mums?

ElijahsMummy13 · 19/08/2015 20:31

Hi ladies, I'm looking for some, well support I suppose.
I have anxiety problems and have had these for 3 years now. Last year it came to a head and I ended up taking Citalopram to help with my anxiety. It did work and I was much happier. However, I came off of it in January. Recently I have been suffering again and so today, after speaking with my GP, have been once again prescribed Citalopram.
My first day on it last time was horrific and I was incredibly anxious to the point I was shaking so much I couldn't pick up my son. I was wondering if any other mums have also been in this situation and found they reacted better initially the second time around? I know it will get better but I'm so worried!

I've recently gone back on it and haven't really felt more anxious this time round, but dr did prescribe me beta blockers and diazapam just in case!
Citalopram works very well for me, hopefully all will be ok for you.

Thanks for your reply! It's good to know you have felt less anxious this time. I'm really hoping it will work as well for me this time as it did before.
Can I ask how long you were on it previously?

It could be that you felt so rough last time simply because of your overwhelming anxiety. Taking this DRUG was just one more thing to be anxious over.

This time around, you know that the citalopram will help, you may even be looking forward to feeling better, the treatment is less frightening.

That does make a lot of sense!
I do remember stupidly reading the side effects, etc last time and thinking how insane it is to list such horrible things in a medication designed for those who have anxiety and inevitably worry about everything!
I suppose I should concentrate on how good I will feel this time next week.

Quite!

I handed the packet to dh, told him to take the patient info leaflet out and read it and tell me anything he felt I needed to know. And not to put it back in the packet.

I was terrified!

The one thing he chose to tell me was to warn me that I might feel worse 2-4w after starting citalopram.

I didn't, the only side-effects I had were yawning, some weird dreams and a few episodes of vertigo. All passed within 4-6w.

Other than that, citalopram has been brilliant for me. (And I finally read the leaflet after 3-4m.)

I can't remember but less than a year. Oddly I felt less anxious within a day or so of taking it this time and googled because I thought maybe a placebo effect then read this psychcentral.com/news/2010/06/23/some-antidepressants-work-fast-for-anxiety/14905.html

ElijahsMummy13 · 19/08/2015 21:51

Wow that is such an interesting article. I did wonder about placebo effect too, but it's amazing to know how well it actually works. I did feel much better after 3 days so hopefully I'll be feeling much better before then this time.

I still haven't read the side effects. I was prescribed setraline before and read the side effects and was then too scared to take them. Although I'm glad of that now because I never really wanted to take any kind of addictive medication.

I haven't taken this but if you are able to cut the tablet in 1/2 & take 1/2 a dose for the first 2 weeks that lessens any side effects. My psychiatrist always started me off on 1/2 a dose. Check if the tablet is coated or slow release as you won't be able to cut them. You can ask a pharmacist if it is ok to cut them. You can buy pill cutters or some tablets are scored so you can break them in 1/2.

Well I've taken it for two days now and I haven't had the same side effects as last time at all. I've just felt a little sick and dizzy first thing in the morning and that is it so a much better experience this time round. Now just to wait for it to start helping with the anxiety!

Citalopram Mums?
Jdee41 · 21/08/2015 16:46

I'm a dad on Citalopram (20mg doses), and have been now for nearly a year due to depression.

I found that initially I had some nausea and it didn't improve my broken sleeping, but it has had a positive effect and I feel a bit lighter nowadays, which is surprising as I have had a bit of upheaval this year but have been able to cope with it thanks to the boost.

ADHD · 21/08/2015 17:21

Tried many different med but Citalopram works best for me. On 40mg.

Dancingquality · 23/08/2015 16:30

Citlaropram works for me on 20mg.

It does however affect my memory quite a bit and when I try to hide emotions when someone upsets me it must come across as being moody or something, where I'm trying not to react. I find I have lost ability to think on my feet as it were. I feel quite zombiefied a lot of the time but not anxious like I used to.

GooodMythicalMorning · 23/08/2015 17:39

I have this too I call it 'Feeling far away'...

Im on 40mg. I still get shakey sometimes if in an unfamiliar area but it's much better than it was.

CremeEggThief · 23/08/2015 17:46

I'm on the 10 mg for anxiety and have been over a year. I was initially put on 20mg for low level depression about two and a half years ago, but came down to 10, as that's the maintenance dose for anxiety. I hadn't realised just how much I suffered from anxiety still until the vital pram kicked in. goodness, it's fantastic for anxiety. I can't imagine coming off it now. So glad that it's working better for you this time around, OP Smile.
