Having a terrible experience with this and wonder whether it's just a one-off or perhaps AIBU?! - SORRY for long post it's complicated..

relevant background - long history of depression/anxiety, over 20 years of stuff in my NHS records, the vast majority would be GP visits

Anyway so a month ago went to psychiatrist to changing meds. Current ADs aren't doing anything. He suggested either Setraline or Cipralex. I think I have been on Cipralex before, years back, but not sure if it was a positive or negative outcome at the time.. So psych said he would write to GP, I could decide which to start, and then revisit him a few weeks after I'd started. All seemed fine with that plan.

Shortly after that appt, I went into the GPs to find out how to get the information I needed about Cipralex. First asked for GP appt but told there wasn't any for 3 weeks. As I am going through bad episode at the moment, time is of the essence, so I thought perhaps GP appt not required can get this done quicker. The receptionist wasn't very kind, I asked to speak privately to explain this, but she ignored me, just kept saying "no appointments for 3 weeks" in the end I ended up crying in front of room full of waiting patients whilst holding DS. She said she would get duty doc to call me. Later, After after explaining to doc, he quickly said he would get someone else to call to deal with medical records.

That person called the next day, seemed a bit nonplussed but said they would have to look into it and get back to me.

A day or so later they got back to me but suggested it was very complicated - as it was records that was from my previous GP practice - and again they would get back to me. I made it very clear that my main concern was just finding out about my DRUG HISTORY to make this urgent decision. Secondarily I said I was interested in seeing my whole history because - partly due to my illnesses themselves - I now realise it is very unclear in my mind and I think that seeing it all might help clarify some things for me. I reiterated twice that the full history could WAIT and the drug history was the URGENT thing.

Third time, they called and said that some of the information (if it was from a consultant for example) couldn't be given to me for data protection to protect the consultant (??!) so I would have to go direct to the consultant to get that information.Confused I thought this was odd. I don't even remember the names of various doctors I've seen over 20 years!! But I thought would wait until I had idea about the drug history before looking into this further.

Now it's 2.5 weeks later Angry so I called to chase up AGAIN, the same woman keeps saying yes she has my drug history after 2010 - but I specifically said that no, the cipralex was before that so that's no good. She suggested I should call my old GP practice to find out that information! I protested that it has taken a few weeks to get no further forward, and actually started crying and getting quite hysterical on the phone, as I am DESPERATE to change meds and feel better. She did say that she understood but she was doing this searching around "on top of her normal job" and she "only works part time" and made me feel like I was expecting too much. She says she will speak to practice manager tomorrow and get back to me Hmm

Called the old practice and the lovely lady I spoke to Flowers immediately understood my situation and said she was "appalled" that I was being made to ring around and collate this information myself. She went away to make some checks, came back 5 minutes later and said she had ascertained that my GP practice DID have all my paper notes (she tells me they are called MRE - medical records envelope) and they were delivered to my local practice in Feb 2010.

I dont understand what is going on? Have you asked for your records? Did you get them? Did you have problems with "data protection"??! Confused

How annoying for you. As you are having difficulties I would make a formal request. This NHS page tells you how. I used a standard letter from the information commissioner's website to apply for mine. They are obliged to provide them within 40 days, but there may be a small fee.

Gunpowder · 13/04/2015 18:36

Oh and if you have further difficulties after making a formal request you can complain to the information commissioner too.

Hope you get them soon.

ive applied for my hospital notes £30.00 - havent arrived yet but they did explain, every consultant needs to give consent for you to read what theyve written, its rare but they might deem some information harmful.
so something might be blacked out ect...its a timely process.
gps have separate notes

MumWithCamera · 13/04/2015 19:19

thanks gunpowder will wait to see if anything comes of tomorrow's phonecall, if not will go straight to that form. Didnt know any of that existed so thats great!

wfrances did you find it straightforward? I dont mind the cost at all, and I wouldn't mind waiting if I knew how long. It's the "getting nowhere" and the constant uncertainty from the lady at the GP that is making me upset when I'm already in a vulnerable state. useful to know re consultant, the lady I spoke to said I would have to contact each consultant myself Hmm

i phoned the hospital and said can you put me through to the dept that deals with the records.
spoke to them, they sent me out a form -you fill in all your details and have someone other than family to counter sign it ,decide what information you want ect...
they do all the chasing ,ive ordered my full records from birth to present time including mental health ,all charts /xrays / emergency admissions
this costs £30.

MumWithCamera · 13/04/2015 20:14

wow! wfrances £30 would be a bargain for my full history - it's a lot of paperwork Grin thanks thats useful

I think the max they can charge is £50. Mine were just maternity notes and only £22.

MummySparkle · 13/04/2015 23:17

I've seen the folders mine are in, there were 2 at the time and they were bulging Blush and that was just the MH ones one day is like to order them all to piece back together everything. Anyway, I digress. I would have thought drug history for a specific drug would be a relatively easy search, I'm sorry that it has taken so long for you. I hope you get some answers soon x
