I have a fear that after everything I eat I am having a reaction to, I feel as if my throat is closing it goes as tight it's so scary has anyone else had this? Also how will I know if it's a reaction or just anxiety ?!

It sounds like anxiety to me - and the more anxious you get the more your throat will tense up - I think it's when you can't swallow food that it needs checking out and even then it can be an inflamed larynx or something non sinister. Is your food sticking in your throat or are you swallowing it ok?

See how things go and see a GP if you're still worried.

Check out "globus hystericus". Terrible name but it's a panicked feeling that your throat is going to close. It can be treated with CBT/anti-anxiety treatment but you should get checked to outrule issues with your tonsils etc.

Hi OP, last year I suffered massively with panic attacks and feeling like my throat was closing/I couldn't breathe. I nearly called an ambulance a few times!

Mine happened during massive amounts of stress at work, I got through it generally by calling helplines and breathing my way through - but it's horrible!

I'm in no way a doctor but it sounds to be like these feelings are anxiety related. Do you have any issues (that sounds horrible but can't think of a better word) with food/eating? Are you stressed about anything at the moment?

I'd say if you can it would be good to go see your GP. Maybe also look at what foods are triggering it, and whether it could be an allergy? x

I've had this and it's awful, with me it was anxiety after 5 bereavements (3 of them baby losses) in two years.

It sounds odd but I found singing helped. I'd put on a favourite song really loud (headphones if you need to be quietish) and belt it out to prove to yourself your throat and breathing are fine. Do it every single time and it will help. Smile

Exercise also worked, the endorphins but also getting rid of all that adrenaline too.
