Anxiety in pregnancy

Is there any help available on the nhs? I was brave enough to ask doc for help for the first time in my life only to be told that there wasn't any available while pregnant as no medication was allowed. I was in tears down the phone to her anyway but I should have asked about non medicated help ie cbt or talking therapies. She was utterly useless and now I am put off asking for help again but still worrying my anxiety and negative thoughts will affect baby.

I have my first midwife apt next week so was thinking of asking there but don't want to receive the same pathetic response. Has anyone had any experience of this? If so what help were you offered? I really need to address the anxiety as I am concerned it will get worse and I want to do everything right for my little baby.

Thank you

Tosh from your gp. Medication is often given in pregnancy. Some areas have specialist maternity mental health help-ask your midwife. What are you anxious about?

The anxiety and thoughts always flit from one thing to another but since being pregnant it's about the health of the baby. I am just constantly worried that something has happened and have had a few reassurance scans so far to try and ease the anxiety. While I feel that this is a totally natural thing it perhaps isn't so natural to be all consuming and I just worry constantly that I am doing the wrong thing and if something were to happen it would be down to something I've done. For example I am currently a bit poorly with a cough and bug and I'm worried the coughing will damage it.. It sounds a little lame when written down but hope you get the gist!

I do-it is natural but if it's becoming all consuming you need at least to be able to talk it through. Your body is incredibly good at nurturing and protecting your baby -you can be at deaths door but your body will divert all necessary nutrients to uour baby. Have you seen a heart beat on a scan yet?

Talk to your midwife - they know exactly what help is available in pregnancy. Where I live there is:

  • a specialist midwife for people struggling with anxiety/mental health issues
  • a perinatal psychiatric team your midwife can refer to
  • support groups for people with pnd and support from children's centre and health visitor post birth.
