Old scars and going to the doctor

I was just wondering whether anyone had any good tips for handling these types of situations. I need to see a doctor about my stomach and it's likely that they want to examine it. I still have some very old SH scars that are dark but visible and pretty distinctive.

I don't really want to be showing them to a doctor in the first place but understand it might be necessary. I really don't want to go into detail about it with GP but I'm afraid that they might mention it and I can't think of a good response. Is it likely that a doctor would even mention it? Has anyone else got any ideas on how to politely say 'drop the subject' if they do happen to make a reference to them?

I usually say "I used to self harm so I have scars on my arms/legs/stomach". I find it's easier to be matter of fact about it. Sometimes doctors will ask if it's a current problem, but usually it is just accepted.

Thanks CaulkheadUpNorth, being matter of fact sounds like the best option. Doctors surgeries make me nervous though so hopefully I don't get too nervous or I probably won't make any sense!

It has worked for me in lots of settings. I just think of it as something doctors see all the time too, so that helps as well.

Thanks CaulkheadUpNorth, that really does help - it makes it slightly less stressful keeping in mind that it's something they see every day. Thanks for your help, I will make that appointment now, I've been putting it off for a while!
