If I can't take SSRIs, what other options have I got?

I'm just finishing being weaned off sertraline due to excessive bruising which my GP believes was caused by it. He said that the excessive bruising/clotting problems is something that can be a side effect of all SSRIs rather than just sertraline itself so he doesn't want me to take any other ADs in that range. He also doesn't want me to take venlafaxine as bleeding disorders can be a side effect of it.

So I'm now on mirtazapine. I'm on 15mg which is the lowest dose and I only took my first one last night. My understanding is that it can be quite sedating at first but I feel awful! I took it at 10 last night, went to bed at midnight and I've been asleep on and off since then (mostly on). It's nearly 4pm and I'm still in bed as I feel so zonked. My limbs feel really heavy and I feel like I've been whacked round the head with a frying pan a few times. I know it's something that might wear off but it's worrying me. I work 12 hour shifts and have a dissertation to write, I don't have time to feel so sleepy! I've read that upping the dose can decrease the sedative effects but the potential weight gain is something that worries me as well.

I know I should give it time to settle down but like I said, I really do feel rubbish. I had diarrhoea and nausea the first few days on sertraline which was horrible but this comatose feeling feels much worse to me! If I did come off mirtazapine, I don't know what other options are available to me. It seems like there are only the older and harder ADs that aren't going to be suitable. I feel like my only other option is taking St. John's Wort. Confused

GPs still prescribe the old fashioned tryclics (imipramine) is one of them and there are a lot more. The NICE guidelines first choice are SSRIs because the tryclics are more dangerous in overdose. But they can be very effective for depression and anxiety which is what I assume you are talking about.

I'm on 45mg mirtazapine and haven't had any side effects other than 1.5 stones weight gain which I hate, so I'm going to be weaning myself off them sometime soon. Sounds like you've had a really bad reaction, even at low dose but you need to give them time, as the side effects often wear off over a week or so.

NICE also recommend psychological therapy, if you're up for it, it can be as effective as drugs but with fewer side effects ;)

Yes sorry this is for depression and anxiety, social anxiety in particular. Sertraline did work very well for me in that regard so I'm disappointed that I can't take it any more. Yeah I know I need to give it time, I'm just impatient as I've got a lot going on this week and I need to be on the ball, not so drugged up I can hardly move.

I'm on the waiting list for counselling and have been since June. I have no idea when I'm going to get any sessions. I've had counselling/CBT in the past which I found helpful for a short period but the depression and anxiety came back again.

over the last 10 years I've had dothiepin/dosulepin, amitriptyline and lofepramine (and a dozen or so other saris, snris etc). I've found the side effects with the tricylcics far more tolerable and withdrawal too. you can find ones that are more, or less sedating depending on what you are looking for. no extreme food cravings like with mirtazepine or loss of orgasm (you really miss this one when it gets taken away), no brain zaps or long term insomnia issues.

this is of course just my experience but I have found that apart from a first few days of slight problems eg itchiness with lofepramine, they did not make me feel worse.

should say that these were all taken at separate times. also that the worst side effect was major constipation but fibrogel and the occasional laxative eased any discomfort.

I've been on many different ads so feel free to chat, am pretty new to mm so apologies for typos and general rambling
