I am on 20 mg of olanzapine I have gained 4 stone. I have drawn up a new exercise/healthy eating regime.

Psychiatrist is fine with this. But I had a meds review with pharmacist today and he is unhappy and said with the meds I'm on he recommends nothing more strenuous than walking.

I am on 20mg olanzapine
800mg sodium valproate
200mg sertraline
2mg clonazepam.

Who would you listen to?

I would repost this in general health and add a call into your thread title for GPs to ask for the advice of medics. The dosage of medication you have listed would not mean much to those who are not health care professionals.

Good luck!

I would ask my GP.

Ask for topiramate, it's an appetite suppressant and is often used in conjunction with olanzapine. I would ask psychiatrist again as well as I've been on most of those Meds and exercised a lot - you may be in a different situation though. You can ask for a second opinion and explain the pharmacists views.

I agree you need qualified medical opinions on this. I would say though that I've had to lose weight whilst on medications that tend to cause weight gain, not the same ones admittedly. Due to physical issues I did it largely without exercise. You need to do a huge amount of exercise to burn off a relatively small amount of calories, so eating is the main area to address for anyone trying to lose weight. Obviously exercise helps and it is highly annoying when you can't do it, but it isn't essential. Walking would certainly be enough to help you out a bit.

Well done on drawing up your plan Smile, I admire your determination and I hope it goes well for you.

Was thinking about you today inamess and wondering how you were. How are you apart from the weight gain. It's a bugger isn't it - I've put on between 1.5 and 2 stone which I can ill afford because of an AD mirtazapine.

Thanks all I'm quite down I'm gonna speak to my gp and see if I can exercise or not.

Good idea, after exercise isn't just good for weight loss it is good for boosting you mood, so you don't want to write it off unless your doctor says you must. You could ask if there is anything like gentle walking or swimming you could try initially.

Hope you're ok.
