Anxious about holiday next week...

…that's it really.

I suffer anxiety generally, had depression a few years ago.

Recently suffered bouts of raised heart rate and general tight, achy chest and have been referred by GP for echo and 24 hour ecg.

I know it's probably the anxiety but I've convinced myself I'll have a heart attack/fall ill on holiday. Sad

I'm not on any meds for it, generally controlled it with exercise, diet, quiet life etc.

Feeling awful and panicky. Would really rather not go. Sad

I do understand what you're saying.

Is it likely you'll feel better once you're there? Is not going an option?

Thank you for replying.

We are going with the in laws so if I didn't go the kids would still have a good time. Dh would be upset and very worried .

I'm an anxiety sufferer anyway and the latest issue with tight painful chest and fast heart beat is what's scaring me most. I've had a heart attack on the plane so many times in my head now it's unreal. If I go I'm worried I'll feel trapped, no one to help or listen. I want to stay so much but the repercussions would be huge. Ds1 would also find it very distressing.

On the scale of things that people deal with here on the MH boards this is truly nothing. It's dominating my life this week though. I just don't feel I'll live to be old iykwim.

Oh I do know what you mean, particularly your last sentence. Maybe you could consider a trip to the GP to see if there is something you could take or at least have in your handbag to take if you become overwhelmed with the feelings?

commonorgarden · 02/08/2014 14:07

That's a good idea to go back to the gp. I find medication anxiety inducing in itself which is a problem but I really think I'll end up freaking out and not boarding the plane at this rate.

I'm not pleased you know what I mean when I say I'll never live to be old (I am sorry if you suffer too) but it is a comfort to know someone understands. It's such a sad mindset. I look around at the grannies looking after their dgc s for school hols at the mo and think that'll never be me.

Hi
First of all well done for managing anxiety with diet and exercise.
I took my first flight in March thus year after three years of horrendous anxiety and panic attacks.
I know exactly how you are feeling.
I think it would be a good idea to go and see your go. They will be able to give you diazepam which you will be able to take before your flight to calm you.
It really does work.
The thing is that you will continue to build this picture up in your head of something horrible happening. Of course it's your imagination. But you can't help it.
Def see your gp. And consider cognitive counselling when you get back. You will be taught coping strategies for dealing with anxiety in the future.

I have been on 2 return flights this year. Didn't need medication for the second one.
You can and will get better

Ah, thank you for replying.

I had cbt too (forgot to mention that) and it was great for me. Terrible night tonight. Horrible anxiety and painful chest. I'm going back to gp in the morning :(
