How can I help my friend

My close friend has gone into deep depression very suddenly and is desperately in need of antidepressants. She has been prescribed diazepam and citrolopram but is refusing to take them. She is rapidly getting worse but I don't know how to best help her. She has 3 young children and it is beginning to effect them. I have heard that CItrolopram can make you initially feel worse and wondering if there is something that she can take instead that would not give her this initial low as I worry that she may become suicidal. Any suggestions please

Whilst all medication has potential side effects citalopram is one if the first line Ad's prescribed and the dr will have considered it suitable for your friend. The diazepam can take the edge off feelings but is bit long lasting ( and will bt be prescribed longer term). Ultimately it is up to your friend to take medication prescribed; I assume she sought help, and went to the dr's so if she refuses to take medication perhaps she should return to the gp and tell them this? The diazepam is quick acting, can make a person drowsy if a higher dose ( so best not to take the first time if in sole charge of children until know how it affects you). Apart from a different AD there is no other option. And citalopram is seen as one of the ones to take as a first type of treatment as is often better tolerated. Remember all meds have potential side effects, including antibiotics etc listed but does not mean people suffer them.

Practical help with the children may give her some space and rest which may help? Does she have family/friends that can assist?
