Am I just going to crash?

Hello,

I have been on Prozac for around 9 months after refusing to take it for years. It got to the point last year when I knew I had to do something for my family's sake and I did and it worked. I needed to take them years ago for for various reasons including the stillbirth of my fisrt son and abuse as a young child/teenager by my grandfather.

Anyway, I have been wanting to come off of it for a little while now and went on holiday last week forgetting to take the meds with me. Hence a week without AD's. I haven't taken them now for just under 2 weeks and feel fine. But I am worried that around the 3 week mark of not taking them everything will come crashing down around me. Anyone know if this will happen?

In your circs (in the circs of anyone who has been on ADs) I'd do as much to eliminate anxiety as poss and that would include tackling this understandable worry about the 3-wk mark. Can't you go to GP, and ask for medical advice? I came off ADs very very slowly, over a period of 2 mths was petrified something would go wrong, but all was well. As DSW says she came off in one day without ill effects so all may be fine but really, why risk it when you know the medical advice?

Thank you both of you! I really hope I continue to feel ok too. At least I know that if I ever feel like I did last year again, there is a way of combatting it. I'm not scared of AD's anymore. I am enjoying my boys so much (they do drive me mad sometimes, but that's normal life isn't it) I guess time will tell if I have done the right thing.

not a medical opinion here, but i thought i'd heard about coming off these type of meds gradually. why not go chat to a practice nurse or gp (whoever's most approachable); like previous posst says, if nothing else it may lessen your anxiety...
best of luck

Excellent - good for you calebsmummy

bakedpotato, the trouble with seeing the doctor is that I wouldn't get an appointment for 3 weeks! I do totally understand what you are saying but do feel that as things seem on a pretty even keel now, that it's ok. Obviously if I was still down it wouldn't even be an option and i feel that if I do start to feel like I did, then I would go back on them immediately (but would also be aware of the few weeks it takes for them to take effect)

can you not just phone up and ask to speak to gp

calebsmummy · 31/08/2006 19:33

thanks VVVQV

stinky pete, I had heard the same and was planning to come off slowly, but as I didn't have a choice whilst on holiday (other than going through all the palaver of seeing a GP ther, explaining etc) it's kind of happened this way.

DSW, yes thats an option, definately. I will call her tomorrow. Am very reluctant to a
see another Gp as she has always dealt with it (apart from the first time I went) and I trust her. I suspect you all know what I mean.
