My father (in his 70s) has been depressed for over a year. He has has a bout of depression in the past, but came out of it. He has taken various medications that don't appear to have helped. He had a few weeks of counselling (not a psychiatrist/ psychologist), when he said that the counsellor agreed that he should be worried- his main thing is financial worries. There is no truth to this- he has always been careful, and has a good pension, savings etc. I am sure the counsellor didn't agree with him, but my dad is too anxious to listen.
We feel helpless; I am sure there must be treatment available e.g. CBT, but it hasn't been offered. Because of his anxiety around money, he does nothing- won't drive the car; won't go out; won't put on the heating. Should he being offered more help?

For adults over 65 most areas have a specific elderly mental health team. So why not ask your gp for you father to be referred to them for assessment. They can then tailor a package of treatment specifically for his needs, which can include cbt.
