Anyone doing it? I'm in the running for a ft job which is great but it means that nHS counseling is out due to 9-5 hours.
Anyone successfully done private ? Is it worth it?

I see my therapist privately. In my experience it means I focus more as I'm paying for it. I've seen her for two years and I like the open-ended ness of it rather than the 10 weeks (or similar) on nhs.

i'm having private psychotherapy. It's CAT (cognitive analytic therapy) which is time limited at 16 or 24 sessions although you can also have follow up sessions. It's also very solution focused. It's not an easy or gentle therapy - but that's why I love it because it is very powerful. You map out your 'patterns' that are causing you difficulty and then develop exits with the therapist. check out www.acat.me.uk if you want to find out more.

I'm thinking of doing that eye movement therapy for trauma. Is it emdr? anyone had experience with this?

I had emdr a few years ago. It helped me with the day to day coping (less flashbacks, felt calmer etc) but didn't help entirely.

For me, a huge amount is about the relationship between you and the therapist. Mine works because of that- I trust her, I respect her and I like her.

Yes it's excellent just google the counselling-directory and you'll be able to see who's on your area. Means you can make sure you get a counsellor you mesh with too.

I see someone privately and it's very empowering knowing I'm in control and they won't suddenly move because of NHS cuts or put anything in my medical records. It's not cheap but worth every penny.

NHS does offer longer term psychotherapy, I had it for two years (2 sessions a week) 1:1 therapy. But it's a bit of a postcode lottery and I have quite a history with MH services. I already have my issues noted in my medical records going back to my early teens, so not much point trying to hide them now. I know my clinic offered EMDR as well, but wasn't appropriate for me. My therapist worked in private practice as well and there's no way I could have afforded private sessions, it would have have cost more than my DLA.

Yes to private - preferred choosing when, where, after work and could choose someone I got on with rather than who I was allocated. Can also choose model of therapy. When you pay somehow it made me use the sessions more, if I had longer term NHS treatment and could keep accessing it I am not sure I would have made the progress I made personally. This was when I worked full time.
