Is it possible to stop associating a thing with a traumatic event?

I'm getting real tired of remembering a traumatic event from my childhood everytime I see a certain innocent object that is pretty common. I hate when this happens, it makes me feel craaaaap and I wish I could see this type of thing and feel neutral. Is it possible to stop associating like this?

I think with a conscious effort it is possible yes. A it like overcoming a phobia? Have you tried cbt? Want to share?

I don't know if this will work, but maybe try and substitute a happy thought for the traumatic memory - the smell and taste of an amazing cup of coffee, the warm feeling of a hug from a friend, the thrill of riding a roller coaster... then when you see this object and start thinking about the event, deliberately focus on your happy thought. It will be hard and take time but I think that if you persevere you can change the association.

I think it is possible but you might need a bit of help.

Would you be able to talk to your dr? You wouldn't have to state the details, just what you've written here, and I'm sure they would refer you for CBT

. I know it has been very successful for people who have suffered PTS after trauma, some over 20 years later. I saw a TV programme about it and the CBT really changed their lives for the better.
