What do they prescribe for panic attacks these days?

I have a history of panic attacks on and off over the last 20 years. Have had 4 year of bliss without any attacks, but over the last month or so I can feel it all starting up again. Before I was prescribed diazepam for the panic attacks, and at one point citalopram, but that was for more generalized anxiety at a very low point. The diazepam worked wonders for me as I could just take it when I needed it, but I am worried about driving and so on when taking it. Would it be diazepam that they would prescribe these days? I am thinking of going to see GP today or tomorrow if they can fit me in.

Many thanks.

I'm on propranolol for anxiety and migraines. They work well for me. Down side is weight gain!

Thanks for the replies! Are you both OK driving on the medication that you have? I have 2 DC that I have to get to various places during the week so need to be able to drive as we live in a village without any public transport.

I am going to the GPs tomorrow morning so will see what they suggest.

I felt a bit wobbly the first few days until my body got used to them. But I drive, work and have kids etc and I'm fine. Smile

Thanks, that's good to hear. Fingers crossed they sort me out with something tomorrow, although typically seeing as I have now booked an appointment, I am feeling good today!

I use diazepam but only at times when not need to drive as for me I have to let it leave my system as it were to drive. Also dh's vary in how keen they are to prescribe diazepam, certainly not keen on much use or regular use without a psychiatrist prescribing it where I am based.

I have propranolol (beta blockers), antidepressants (which help) and diazepam but I only get the diazepam because it is prescribed by my psychiatrist. I'd be surprised if GP prescribed it - they are really clamping down. However I've found propranolol to be good and no weight gain. Might be worth asking about going on waiting list for CBT? Hope it goes well x

I was prescribed Diazepam yesterday for my severe panic attacks. I'm on a low dose to start with and don't feel doped up or anything. I'm still anxious but I'm feeling a bit more in control. HTH.
