Saw gp about adult adhd investigations - she's great!

I have wondered for years why I do the things I do and recently did online quiz and investigated adult adhd. I read like a textbook case. But I'm no doctor so when seeing gp about anxiety and depression yesterday I threw her a curve ball and asked about the situation in our health authority for ADHD investigations/treatment. Actually, she didn't know but she did just what a good gp should. She asked me to make another appointment to discuss it and said she'd recently heard a talk by a leading adhd specialist and would find out if she could refer me.

I don't know what will happen but she was so supportive I felt very safe with her.

I don't know if this will be any help to anyone, but ten months on and I've had an assessment at our local ish specialist adult adhd service and been prescribed meds. It was a five hour appointment and hugely thorough. I left not only with a diagnosis from a specialist but a much better understanding of myself and how much of the stuff I do is adhd related. I start meds tomorrow and, although a little apprehensive and trying not to expect too much of them, I'm hugely excited.

That is fantastic. Can I ask where (roughly) you are?

BigBirthdayGloom · 12/11/2014 20:32

South west. Really sorry not to be more specific.

2 of my DC have ADHD and I'd quite like to be tested myself. Also in SW Grin. May get around to going to GP.

Good luck with the meds.

What a nice thread! In terms of both praising the GP and then coming back with good news; most of the time people only post here with the problem, and then you never know what happened, so it can all sound quite dispiriting.

Did you make sure the GP's practice manager knew how good she'd been? I'm testing a karma approach to life at the moment; I'm a great one for complaining but I usually forget when it comes to making sure someone's singled out for having done something great, so am trying to address that!

Ah, stinking bishop, that's a nice thing to say! I adopt the same approach with regard to praise-always a Christmas card and a nice letter to gp when they've really helped.

Day one of meds-no side effects but equally I am not a model of efficiency yet-really need to tidy the house! However, I can't expect the meds to be a magic wand and I'd be a bit freaked out if I suddenly turned into Monica from friends! It's a low dose to start with and just feeling normal is good-read the list of possible side effects and it was a bit scary. However, the lovely specialist I saw said that if there's something to treat, the meds I'm on seem quite focused. It's just if there isn't anything that they dash around the body to find something else to cling onto. It's concerta xl for anyone with a specific interest.
