Hi! Hope you don't mind me sharing my experience as it was for menopause, not PND. After a lifetime of absolutely no menstrual problems whatsoever (minimal pain, light flow, no mood swings, nothing) I started my menopause about 18 months ago and thought I was going mad. As well as some horrific physical symptoms I was experiencing very scarey mental problems. If I wasn't bursting into tears for no reason, I was just so angry, but with nothing to be angry about. It got so bad that at one point I was ramming my head into a door because I thought I would combust with rage and needed to get it out of me.
I went to the doctor after a few weeks of this, and spent half an hour sobbing at her, fully expecting her to suggest I section myself! Any way, cut a long story short, she prescribed my fluoxetine, and it changed my life. I was on it for three months and I can honestly say that the only unwelcome side effect was that I was having very vivid dreams which started to disturb me bit. Not nightmares, just very life like scenarios (like lucid conversations, or dreaming that I'd done something which then I wouldn't do in RL lol).
So yes, a big thumbs up for Flouxetine from me!

I'm on it. I've previously been on citalopram and sertraline and for me, fluoxetine is the dogs nads. I am level headed but not numb. It's awesome.

Thanks cherry and hug! Fabulous to hear this med working in such varying circumstances! I think my pnd was def set off by hormones oveload (bad birth/ haemorraging/ no milk to then BF due to haemorrage and thyroid issue) so yeh! Hormones have lots to amswer for amd fluoxetine seems to be very popular in helping diminish these issues! Thanks for sharing :)

I've been on it for 18 months. It saved my life, my marriage and my relationship with my DD.

I started to come off it yesterday.

I have been on 20 mg for about a year. To this day I don't know the cause of my depression other than general 2 young dc type problems but I feel so much better now. Like another poster said I am level headed but not numb. I look back on situations that would make me see red and am grateful of the decision I made to go to my gp

Irish1978 · 01/01/2014 16:05

My doctor has prescribed this for anxiety due to emetophobia but heard side effects include nauseaConfused?? Is it right to prescribe when I am not depressed?? I suffer panic attacks...

NewName123 · 01/01/2014 19:19

it has reduced my anxiety generally so I recon it is worth a try, I had no nausea starting it and feel lots better now

Quintessentialmadonna · 01/01/2014 19:46

I have had a lil nausea but not much. For me insomnia worse side affect and lucid dreams. Feeling better after 2 weeks though... So must be kicking in :) comforting to know others dont feel numb just level headed. I have yet to feel this but look forward to it. I too suffer with anxiety and thos seems to be lessening a tad too already. Thanks for replies ladies.

Perhaps I should give its try and see if it helps Smile

NewName123 · 02/01/2014 14:36

Yes, it should be put in the water I think Wink

Southwestwhippet · 02/01/2014 17:57

I have been in it for several years. I call it a normaliser. Doesn't seem to affect me at all except when I don't take it I start getting really paranoid and anxious and my depression comes back. I love it, saved my life.

In the bad side, it does give me heartburn if I take it on an empty stomach and I do get nausea for the first few days after taking a break from it for any length of time. But not crippling nausea, just annoying and only lasts about an hour.

Would rate above setraline for PND and anxiety.

Quintessentialmadonna · 02/01/2014 18:20

Its been 15 days im on it now... I feel better but sure ut wont fully conpletely kick in for another couple weeks? I like the ideas of it being in water/ a normaliser!

I had a bad reaction to it about 9 years ago. Dizziness, nausea and an embarrassing episode of having to have a lie down in the hairdressers toilet while the room stopped spinning.

Citalopram suited me better, and Escitalopram even better still. (and I will be going straight back on it once this baby is out, my goodness, I cannot wait). While on it, people say, "Why on earth do YOU need an antidepressant?". I feel like going round and knocking on their door right now to say "THIS is why".

Anyway, my point is it can take a while to find the one that suits you so don't give up on looking for the right one. Good luck x

yes it is so strange that different AD effect different people in different ways. When I first went on Prozac I couldn't take the side effects of increased anxiety and insomnia. This time around I introduced it slowly and the Dr gave me sleeping tabs for the first 2 weeks. Now I sleep better than I have for 20 yrs.
