I'm writing an Open University assessment piece on mental health and the effect on individuals of receiving a psychiatric diagnosis. I was hoping some of you with a formal diagnosis of any form of mental health problem, whether neuroses or psychoses, would mind telling me how you felt on receiving your diagnosis and whether you find diagnosis a positive (in terms of easier access to treatment or a reason for how you are feeling, perhaps) or negative thing. I don't need names or any personal details and won't include usernames - I'm just looking for some personal quotations from sufferers.

Thankyou in advance to anyone who has the time and energy to respond, much appreciated Smile

When I received my diagnosis it did not lead to treatment as talking treatments were not so readily available 5 yrs ago. It caused a stigma at work. A serious mental health diagnosis means one is not available to access treatments through gp counselling service but unless has a dual diagnosis, in and out of hospital or a danger to themselves cannot receive treatment for recovery. And if one tries to hold down a job even less chance of a diagnosis leading to treatments.
