Finding a counsellor

How do you go about finding a suitable counselor? Or even know what type of counseling technique you require?

I know I need help as I can't keep leaning on my parents to prop me up mentally but I just don't even know where to begin with finding help for myself. I'd be grateful for any words of advice.

Hello, if you google BACP and UKCP, they have lists if accredited counsellors around the country, either with a short profile about how they work, or a link to their website.
I find that the best way to get a feel for whether you can work together is to call and have a chat, they may invite you for an assessment session to talk through your presenting issues and this too will give you a feel for their way of working. For the counselling to work, the relationship between therapist and client must "work", so don't feel that you have to go with the first person you meet

There are three main schools of counselling in the UK and I am almost certain that the BACP website describes them better than I could :) Other therapists work in an integrated way, using aspects from each "school". Choice depends on your presenting issue and time and money

And finally, there may be counselling available via your GP surgery, so it might be worth exploring this too

Hope this helps a little :)
