Emetophobes - Is there an anti-emetic that works on Stomach Bugs/Norovirus

I have been an emetophobe for as long as I can remember with no idea what triggered it.

I've had CBT and Hypnotherapy, neither of which have helped.

Over 18 months ago I went to the GP and broke down, she referred me for the CBT but also prescribed me Buccal anti-emetics that you place between your gum and your lip when you start to feel nauseous and they stop the vomiting. These are now available direct from the pharmacy I believe.

The GP said that they work for all vomiting, whether bug related or not but I'm not sure whether that is right. My DD has had a tummy bug since then, at pre-school and I didn't catch it luckily. But now she's started in Reception and I've just found out today that a child is off with sickness.

I just want to be prepared.

A friend of mine has (naughtily) also given me a box of Metoclopramide that she was given for morning sickness and has said that these are the only anti-emetics that helped with that. But she's not sure whether they would help with a bug.

So has anyone taken anything for a tummy bug that has worked?

Hi Lovelybrew,
Sorry for late reply. You asked about salt water being an emetic. Well, in the quantity I have taken (one tablespoon), it isn't for me usually. Once it was, but actually being sick was better than sitting there endlessly feeling sick which is what I hate most. I've tried the salt thing 5 times and 4 out of the 5 I was not sick but soon felt relief because of its purgative effect. The time I was sick, I hadn't taken any Motilium, so maybe that's why!

Avomine is very good. You can buy it over the counter, but Boots and Tesco don't stock it. Co-op pharmacies seem to have it. It has stopped me vomiting when I've had norovirus, although the first time I tried it, I still retched a lot. Last time (a couple of months ago), I didn't even retch. However, although it's brilliant for stopping vomiting and for getting rid of nausea for reasons other than stomach bugs, you will still feel rotten if you have a bad stomach bug and take it. it takes the edge of the nausea and stops the vomiting, but you will still have the fever, the terrible shakes, the sweating etc and you will still feel sick to some extent. Also, it absolutely knocks you out. (this can be quite useful if you need to sleep but anxiety is keeping you awake)

His all...
Tis the D&V season. .does anyone has any updates on anti emetic efficacy and norovirus? . I have been an emetaphobe for over 20 years..not sure what started it..think anxiety based.. tried CBT and it helped to a certain extent. The thought of vomiting still freaks me out but I've learned to undertake risk assessment before I panic.
My daughter has norovirus at the moment. Day 1 was 1.30 am Monday night/Tuesday morning and she can only just keep fluid down. I have been nursing her with gloves and Ffp3 mask . Plus the new anti virus gel for norovirus by GoJo. On day 4.
When would I take a motilium or buccastem at the first pangs of nausea ?
Im mindful that if you take motilium too often it can cause muscle spasm/cardiac palp. Interested to know people's views. Thanks .
