Hi, didn't like to see you ignored like this! It depends on the counsellor, but in my limited experience (ahem - I've seen 4 over 15 years...), the opener tends to be a smile and a raised eyebrow, usually a gentle question on the lines of: 'So, do you want to tell me why you're here?'. If you don't want to open up, don't feel obliged to - the session will involve a briefing on the types of approach, session, time-scale. A couple of friends said they cried as soon as they hit the chair, and that's fine too. Remember these people are trained to listen, and will accept anything you choose to say.

Good luck, jofeb04.
I have been seeing a counsellor for around a year now & am due to have my last session next Thursday (although my life has turned so badly upside down since I last saw her, so could do with another few sessions!)
I can't remember what she asked on my first session, but I did find the first couple of sessions the hardest, because you are opening up to someone new & tend to cover a lot.
They tend to let you do most of the talking.
My counsellor has been a real lifeline to me over the past year & has helped me to look at things differently and as a result I feel she has helped to make me a stronger person.
I will really miss going to see her!
All the best with your sessions.

Just saw this. Have been thinking of you and wondering how you were doing. Best of luck with the counsellor.
