You say you are under stress at work and your symptoms sound, in my own non professional opinion, a reaction to the stress.

Can you meet with your manager at work next week and let them know you are stressed with work and it is beginning to affect you physically and see what they can do to reduce stress for you. Getting rid of the problem or learning how to cope with a stressful job seems one option.

Things like fresh air and exercise and nice distractions may help.

Sounds like anxiety from stress. I used yo het this a lo, it's horrible.

I found yoga and mindfulness really helped. Focusing on deep breathing helped me physically relax and kept my mind from wondering all over the place and stressing me out. Takes a bit of practice but is a brilliant skill to have.

NothingsLeft · 08/09/2013 12:58

Sorry for the typos

comedycentral · 08/09/2013 13:59

Hi thanks for your reply. I think I need yoga or something in my life. I'm scared that I am ill. Just had a mini power nap then but back to feel super sick. Reading other threads on here is actually comforting & distracting. Didnt really know this part of mn existed x

Sorry you are feeling so crap CC - it does sound like you have anxiety (which really means fear - fear of the future) I am no medic but have suffer with intermittent depression and anxiety. The symptoms of anxiety are many and carried but certainly feel nausea is one of them, as is difficulty in sleeping. You say you feel you are ill and you probably are, mentally rather than physically, and that makes it much harder I think especially if this is the first time you have felt like this.

Yes yoga and mindfulness are both very good, as is exercise, deep breathing (lying on back and putting hand on stomach and take a breath in and a longer one out and feel your stomach rise and fall) and distraction. However it does depend on how "poorly" you feel (this is the term medics use!) If the anxiety really is getting worse you maybe need to see a GP as there are medications that will help though only if you are really not coping.

I honestly don't think you should be going to work if you are feeling so unwell. If you had a physical illness (chest infection or tonsillitis say) you wouldn't be going to work, or even a bad dose of the flu. The problem is because there is nothing to show, we feel that we are just imagining it or making a fuss over nothing. Mental illness is very common and will affect 1 in 4 people in their lifetime.

Look after yourself - don't go to work - call in sick - you are not well enough for work, you will make yourself worse and anxiety can lead to depression and that's a real horrid illness. Try to "nip this in the bud" by taking care of yourself and seeing GP if you are getting worse rather than better. I don't think trying to go to work tomorrow and rushing to a yoga class in the evening is going to help very much to be honest.

Take care and let us know how you are.
There's a great deal of empathy on here as we all have MH problems.

Hi nana thanks for your post. I'm not sure what to do at all. Might try and get a morning appointment at the doctors to see what she says. Been asleep again, wish it was that east to sleep at bedtime!

Thanks for your lovely post xx

No problem - you may well just be suffering from physical exhaustion because of the stress at work, though the anxiety is keeping you awake at night............just a word of caution about Monday mornings in GP surgeries - usually the worst time as they have to "mop up" everything from the weekend.

I don't know what you job is, but you can just call in sick, no need to say what the trouble is, just that you are unwell. You can self certify yourself for about 7 days I think (better check on that) as I am not entirely sure. It may not be fair to go to work if your job is to do with people (or anything else important) as you will not be in a fit state to deal with it.

There's no real need to try and get an appt tomorrow. How about just calling in sick tomorrow and then with work out of the way have a "duvet day" (don't know if you have kids) and try to take stock of what's been happening and how this has built up and whether you feel you can "soldier on" or whether you need to call a halt and go to see the GP.

comedycentral · 08/09/2013 20:38

I see what your saying. Had a text off a colleague about how my weekends been, told her about my 'bug' so at least it's expected if I can't face it. I need rest and sleep. I actually really want to cry but it won't come out. Feel like screaming into a pillow.

OP posts:
NanaNina · 08/09/2013 21:28

Oh CC - you certainly need rest and sleep. Do you think some of your colleagues have noticed that you have been very stressed or would it be normal for someone to send a text asking about your weekend.

I think you must call in sick tomorrow. I think if you can cry, then do so, but I know what you mean about "it won't come out" - can you scream into your pillow, if so go ahead and do it, anything that lessens the anxiety is ok. Do you mind my asking if you have children or a partner or husband and if so will this make things more difficult.

Do you feel you can lie down and try the breathing exercises or are you feeling agitated and restless, as sometimes anxiety manifests itself in this way. Anxiety is horrid but it is also very common and there is help available. This seems to have hit you very suddenly and acutely from what you say, and that is scary.

Keep posting if it helps.

I guess the answer is you will not really know until you changed your job. If a change in job and a few practical changes to your life make your mental state more stable then you will know.

Worth seeing your dr and saying what is going on in your life. They may advocate a watchful wait and offer to see you to review you in a week or so; may offer short term medication to help; could offer a sick/fit note to help you in your current job if that old help etc etc. ultimately if how you are is caused by life events then the best thing is to see if you can change them and if not do things to help you cope. So taking some sick leave and looking at a yoga class sound excellent ideas. Treatment for mental illness may seem on the surface to be medication and or talking treatments but neither will work in the coming few days and ultimately mental illness if caused by life events can often be improved by reducing or removing the stressors.

Changing things by improving diet, taking up exercise or yoga can really help with stress. If you tell your dr work is really stressful and you cannot cope with it any longer even if in a few weeks the job will end they may be able to help you in the here and now and hopefully that is all you will need and no long term mental ill health will follow!!

HoopHopes · 08/09/2013 23:28

Oh if your gym not do yoga then Pilates is very similar nd can help just the same! Why not take a few days off sick and see if your gym got a daytime class for you to go to, many do!!

NanaNina · 09/09/2013 12:16

How are you today CC

comedycentral · 09/09/2013 17:10

Hey all thanks for your comments. I went to work and I was in for two hours until the nerves and sickness resumed. A colleague brought me home. I am going to see how I feel mid week. I have decided to hold off seeing my GO too, just going to see how rest works for me.

Feel calmer knowing I'm off for a few days.

Thanks for the support Cake

GP not go! :-)

NanaNina · 09/09/2013 17:38

That sounds like a good plan CC - work is obviously the root cause of your anxiety, but your body is telling you something and you need to listen to it...........yes see how you feel mid week but my guess is that you need longer......be kind to yourself.

mignonette · 09/09/2013 17:43

To tackle the panic attacks head on, get a paper bag and put it over your mouth and nose making a tight seal. Breathe into it to help correct the imbalance of CO2 caused by the over breathing that panic and anxiety cause.

This site by MIND can help.

You need to get to the root cause of these feelings because medication is no answer except for the immediate time. Contact your GP if the problem persists but use resources like MIND and other online self help groups to help you tackle the causes head on.

comedycentral · 09/09/2013 21:10

Thank you both of you. I feel so much calmer than I have in days. I really hope I can sleep tonight.
