Does anyone know about dosage ? If I go to holland and Barrett would they have the best idea of how to go about going onto this?

Having major stress and low mood so would like to try it but not sure where to start.

Hi. The doseage is on the packet. Boots the chemist also sell it and you can ask pharmacist for advice.

look at web site -Kelly's St Johns Wort for more information

Thank you sorry only just came back on here ( poorly baby)

Bought some today. They said one tablet a day (450 strength ) but I am sure I read I need 900 so would need to take two a day?

I've always gone with the instructions on the packet. If you feel you need something stronger, go to your doctor and get a different drug.

Thanks yes you are probably right although I really don't want anti depressents through the gp as am job hunting and would have to say I was on them for the health declaration.

My GP helped me move from ADs to JSW when I needed to not have ADs on my medical record. Apparently in Germany SJW are first choice for depression/anxiety above ADs? Anyway, the therapeutic dose is basically twice what is says on the pack - so I take Kira Low Mood which is one a day, and I take two of them. GP said the dose on the pack is not enough to do anything. You have to use a reputable brand so you get the right dose of the active ingredient, I think it is called hypericin. You can find the German research online I believe, GP printed it out for me. In my case - mild depression, moderate to moderately severe anxiety of 10 plus years standing - SJW works a lot better than ADs did and as a side bonus I also lost the 3 stone I put on while on Citalopram! Good luck.

Thank you! Yes I think that's the research I saw that made me think I needed 900mg. Which would be two as I have the same as you, kira.

Not one to be left out, DH has decided he wants to go on them too though so it could get expensive!

Boots 3 for 2 on vitamins and supplements is your friend there - I always stock up! Also there are cheaper brands which have the same amount of the active ingredient - Healthspan used to do their own brand which did, for about 1/2 the price of Kira, but I couldn't hack the foul taste. So am basically paying more for a coating!! So if you have a more reasonable gag reflex than me that's a cheaper option.

used2bthin · 03/07/2013 12:05

Thanks, good tip and I can ( if I have to) take tablets without water so I should be ok with that. I used to be on lots of tablets for my back so got used to it young I think.

Dh has started two a day already and thinks they help. I am sticking to one for now but will move to two next week I think.

hi everyone.

I suffer with dreadful anxiety and dip in and out of depression too regularly. (don't think it goes away...some days/weeks I cope with it better iykwim?)

I m doing CBT but avoiding anti d's because I have yet to find one that I can live with...the physical side effects for me outweigh the benefits.

anyway! are there side effects with SJW? do you feel the benefits fairly quickly?

thanks.

CarpeVinum · 05/07/2013 07:15

Watch put for the SJW headache. It's a potential side effeect. I didn't know and didn't associate the awful head I had with the SJW I was taking.

It went as soon as somebody told me and I stopped taking it.

Bananaketchup · 05/07/2013 11:03

I can only speak to my experience chimchar that I've not had any side effects with SJW. Unless you count losing all the weight I'd put on on ADs! I know that if you do take any ADs you have to be completely off them before starting SJW. And you have to tell medical professionals you're taking it because it can interreact with certain things including indigestion medication and anaesthetics. I think I felt the benefits pretty quickly, I definitely remember feeling noticeably better than I had on the mini dose of ADs I'd cut down to before I switched. Good luck.

sjw makes your skin photosensitive so u might want some sunblock

Bananaketchup · 05/07/2013 15:03

Ohh I didn't know that - then again I am a milk-pale redhead so I guess I was there already!
