If you get sectioned under the mental health act what repercussions can it have in your life?

Not sure if that's worded perfectly but what impact does it have on somebody's life if they have ever being sectioned under the mental health act?

I've heard it can affect your travel to places like the US, but I'm not sure how true this is?

Marking my place as I'm interested too.

I have been told that it can affect some travel, the USA especially.

I think if asked you legally have to admit that you have been, whereas if you had been an informal patient you would not have to disclose that information.

It can make it hard to get life / health insurance.

You have to inform your ( potential) employer

"You have to inform your ( potential) employer"

No that is not true.

Only if they ask you in an occupational health questionaire and even then they can only give you the questionaire after a formal offer of employment. Even then the disablity act means that an employer has to make reasonable adjustments.

As far as I know the only unfair discrimation is that if you are an MP and get sectioned then you automatically lose your seat.

Being under the community mental health team can make it hard getting life insurance. However many insurers only consider the past five years.

Ah well when I have applied for jobs I have always had to fill in OH forms before got a contract and it has to be declared there. Job offer is made first, then references are checked if not already done, crv is done, OH forms done and then a contract is done. sometimes then have to see aoH before get contract. No idea what would happen if lied though?

It definitely makes me more difficult travelling to the U.S. Normally you can just sign a waiver but if you've been sectioned you have to apply for a full visa. Whether you have difficulty getting a visa or not I don't know.
