Phobic drivers how are you all doing? I actually drove today!

I know there are a few of us out there who are nervous drivers for different reasons.

I passed my test eons ago and have only owned 2 cars. Haven't driven for years apart from the odd little drive which tbh wasn't good.

I've been wanting to get back behind the wheel for ages. Mainly as it'd be easier to take dcs places, plus give me more freedom.

Now I've got myself a full time job and really need a car so it's made me want to drive (sort of). So today dp pulled up on a quiet Industrial estate and suggested I have a go. So I did. I even had to tackle a junction and a roundabout, and twice. Grin

Dp's car is a bit big for me so am looking for a little run around. Nothing fancy as I won't go far in it. The job's only 2 to 3 miles away. It's split shifts and will probably mean Sundays and bank holidays so there's no way I could rely on buses.

So I'm going from not working or driving for years to full time work and driving. No pressure then Wink

How's everyone else getting on? Has the sunshine made you fancy a go?

Yay! That's fab :) well done you

I'm not a nervous driver, but my mum crashed when she was 8 months pregnant with me and point blank refused to drive a car for 9 years. A changing family situation gave her a bit of a wake up call and she bought herself a little runaround and booked some refresher lessons. Now she drives pretty much anywhere and everywhere and doesn't even think about it. She says the thing that helped was continuity and momentum, in that once she was back behind the wheel, she knew she had to drive every day, for it to become the norm.

Good luck :)

Well done your mum Smile I agree with her, if you leave it too long then it's hard to get back behind the wheel.

I could do with driving today as have to go and fill in my CRB for my new job and the weather isn't good. I'm not going to risk it though will just get the bus and walk the rest of the way. Dp's in bed (nightshift) so the car is just sitting there. If I'd had more practice I could've taken it.

Millie funnily enough I was approx 8 months pg with ds2 when I stopped driving. But I kept getting numb down one side and had to go into hospital. Probably hormonal? It's what put me off though.

Anyone watching Richard Wilson learn to drive with a gear stick?

No, but it sounds interesting ;)

How's it going? :)

I haven't done anymore but I'm looking at cars. Think it'll be a Ford Ka and looking forward to driving it. That's a big change :) Thanks for asking.

I had a Ka as a courtesy car once. Loved it! It was so nippy and so easy to manoeuvre and park.

Juniperdewdropofbrandy · 02/06/2013 21:52

Thanks Millie I haven't been able to get a test drive of one yet but it's good to know it's easy to drive.

Ended up with a Corsa. It's lovely though even drove it about 15 miles today Grin I must go out alone tomorrow though otherwise the fear will return.

Oh, we had a corsa as a courtesy car recently too and I loved it (for the record, I think they were my only 2 courtesy cars, I don't make a habit of denting mine ;))

15 miles is fab!! Keep plodding on and soon you'll realise that you've done a little drive without even thinking about it

Juniperdewdropofbrandy · 05/06/2013 12:29

I took ds1 for his driving theory last night not far but it's another little trip, was rush hour again! He's only 15 but has done a youth driving course.

Glad to know you liked the Corsa too. I'm enjoying it, quite nippy really.

Sounds like you are doing really well! Rush hour traffic makes my head explode sometimes and driving rarely bothers me :)
So don't underestimate how fab you are doing!

Thanks Smile
