Headaches and St John Wort

I have been taking St johns wort for about 2 weeks now. I took 300 the first day, and built up over the next couple of days to 900mg. I have been getting quite bad persistent headaches most days now. Does anyone have any experience of this. It is working brilliantly for my mild depression, so it would be a shame to have to stop it now. Do you think the side effects will lessen soon, as it is becoming a bit annoying. Sorry as I write this I am thinking there people who are dealing with much worse than this on this forum, but if anyone has any experience of this I would appreciate the feedback.

I would recommend going to your GP to discuss it - apologies if you are already doing that. You can get SJW on prescription so you could discuss side effects etc and get an overall picture of how your treatment is working.

You can't get SJW on prescription in the UK as far as I know. I would persevere for a couple more weeks if I were you. When are you taking the tablets out of interest and do the head aches happen at a certain time of day?

Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor or any sort of medical professional. What follows is just my experience from taking SJW.

Even at a full dose of 900 mg it would take at least three weeks for SJW to start taking an effect. I've had this confirmed by my GP, as I get it on prescription here in Germany. Great that you've noticed an improvement, but it's quite probably just the placebo effect so far. However, the good news is that if you manage to persist despite the headaches, you should feel even better once it starts really kicking in. I think it's great that you're trying to deal with mild depression without resorting to ADs (once it gets beyond mild depression of course it's a whole different ball game). I've heard that SJW for mild depression is at its most effective when combined with other techniques - fresh air and moderate exercises, whatever you can manage, eating as healthily as possible, cognitive therapy, yoga or meditation, etc

I've not heard of headaches being a common side effect, but different people can react in all sorts of different ways to medications, and I certainly couldn't say if the headaches are likely to fade with time as your body gets used to the active ingredients. And we have no way of knowing if you are reacting to some extra ingredient in that particular brand.

I've had SJW on prescription in the past, assumed it was still the case.
