If you or your partner suffer from depression and have been seeing a psychiatrist, what do you do about holiday insurance? Do you tell the insurance company - and thus risk them deciding not to insure you? Or do you keep quiet about it and hope nothing happens? We will be travelling in western Europe, if that helps.

Not sure if what I am going to suggest will work or not.
I use the online company Insure and Go.Some members of my family have medical conditions, though not mental health.
The website is very clear and easy to use, especially the medical conditions part.
So,havent used it specifically for what you are talking about, but you could put in your details, and try it out,and see what comes up online. You wont be commiting to anything I dont think, until the payment bit at the end.So if you decided that the company,or the price or whatever was not for you,you could just delete the online application with no repercussions.

Disclaimer. We have never had to make a claim with them,so no idea what they are like if that were to happen.I think they are currently the biggest online holiday insurance Co.

I've recently got an annual policy, I told them I was being treated for anxiety, I got the insurance without an increase in premium however I am obviously not covered for the anxiety. Personally I would not want to travel not having disclosed something, insurance companies can refuse to pay out on a claim if you have not disclosed something, even if it is not relevant to the claim, hth,

Thought I might have had more responses - surely not a unique query?

Anyway, this not anxierty, but severe depression lasting 4 years so far, and 2 suicide attempts. I fully understand that I wouldn't expect a payout if DH committed suicide on holiday (perish the thought) but I would like to be covered for somebody nicking our luggage or something like that. So, how much do I disclose?

My DH has bipolar and we always declare it when getting a quote, so if he did get ill while we were away, his care would be covered. If you just buy basic insurance and don't declare the depression, you would be covered for things like luggage going missing, breaking a leg etc - as long as it was unrelated to the depression.
IMO the peace of mind, knowing we are covered, is worth the extra cost. They normally ask about medication and hospital stays, sections etc.
I think Mind has a section on travel insurers that will cover MH conditions.

Ok, thanks for the link to the MIND website. In the end I decided to go with Insure & Go. The cover cost £48 and went up to £64 when I added details of DH's depression. Sorted.

They do seem a reasonable price, and the site seems easier than most.
Hope you never have to make a claim, and hope you have a nice holiday.
