Taking anti depressants, will it calm my nerves too?

I've had permanent butterflies for around 4 weeks, feeling really anxious about nothingin in particular. I have been having CBT since and also just started taking AD's just over a week ago. The AD's seem to have sorted out my depression but i've still got these damn butterflies.

has anyone had any experience of this? will they subside the longer i take the ADs? this is what i am really hoping.

bit of background but my life is quite stressful at the momen t. DH working v hard and not really around and I have 2 small DCs so it's all quite hard work supporting everyone. this is probably teh cause of the butterflies but i thought i was of stronger stuff than this. Have coped fine with much worse than this...

can i take anything for teh butterflies too?

please help as i am getting to the end of my tether.

Ime anxiety is harder to treat with medication than depression, but CBT is better for anxiety than depression, so it sound like you have a good combo, you just need a little patience for everything to work.

Anxiety is a bitch, I have had a particually shit day with it today, hope things look up for you soon Smile

I was given beta blockers for anxiety ( I was on Citalopram as well) I found then to be helpful. It was Propanol ( that's not spelt right!)

marilynmonroe · 14/07/2012 09:13

Cobblers hope you have a better day today.

I'm not finding cbt that helpful. I don't think the counsellor is that good. I've had it before and it really helped.

When I wake up in the morning I feel really awful even though I've managed to sleep.

I'm scared for my poor heart.

Any advice or reassurance welcome.

Coco. Did you take the beta blockers with ads? And has your anxiety returned?

Yes I did. I had the 'jitters' my stomach was always churning. The dr said they would work straight away because they stop the physical side of anxiety. I used them whilr wsuting for the citalopram to start to work . I stopped them after awhile, I kept getting the prescription because I could just start them again if needed. I just weaned myself of citalopram a few weeks ago after being on it 3 years.

marilynmonroe · 14/07/2012 09:32

Thanks for that. It's quite reassuring. Good luck with coming off the ads. Wishing you a bright happy future!

Thanks, hope you find some relief Smile

Propanolol, that was it!

orangeflutie · 14/07/2012 20:24

You should feel less anxious after a few weeks. It takes a good 2 - 4 weeks depending on which ADs you are taking for everything to settle down.

marilynmonroe · 14/07/2012 21:48

I'm taking fluxotine. Do you have experience of that?

OP posts:
Lucyellensmum99 · 14/07/2012 21:53

fluxotine is prozac which is in the same family of ADs as citalopram, serteraline and seroxat, all of which are used to treat anxiety too. I was given citalopram for anxiety.

You have only taken these for a week so they will not have kicked in yet and paradoxically can make the anxiety worse until you settle down with them. It will take a few weeks for them to really start to work.

I hate that anxious for no particular reason feeling, i am awaiting CBT and trying to manage without drugs atm but its difficult.

cocolepew · 14/07/2012 21:55

My DH is on fluxotine he saw a difference within a week. When I went on citalopram I felt better really quickly. I never had the anxiety getting worse before it got better.

MyLittleMiracles · 14/07/2012 22:02

I was given citalopram and diazepam for my post natal depression and anxiety, i was told citalopram would take at least 3 weeks to get into my system, but diazepam did help, i was also on sleeping tablets, zopiclone, to begin with, but i was in a really bad way. I am now just over a year on, and off of all of them the sleeping tablets were only prescribed for a few weeks, but the diazepam slowly dropped off and now i no longer take citalopram, and i feel okay, sometimes i still feel anxious etc, or nervous when around new people but i am doing okay.

marilynmonroe · 15/07/2012 11:57

Thanks all! I am feeling a bit better this morning. Much less anxious than in previous weeks. I hope it lasts. If not you might need to hold my hand some more!

Well after a good day yesterday I had the most awful sleep. Went to bed at 10 after a nice bath and woke at 1am needing the toilet and then I started having a panic attack and was up for 2 hrs. Then another one at 6am. I have no idea why this happened but it's really upsetting. Any words of wisdom?

OP posts:
MyLittleMiracles · 16/07/2012 19:23

Firstly go to your doctor, some anti depressants have a side effect of panic attacks.

If there was no trigger I don't know what to suggest. Could it have been something in your dreams that triggered them?

I am sure the wealth of mumsnet knowledge will help. In the mean time, have a (((hug))) and my hand to hold.

marilynmonroe · 17/07/2012 07:13

Thanks miracles. Managed to sleep last night but woke up feeling anxious. Got my cbt session this morning but don't really feel like its helping.

You have to give things time to work, it will get easier and it will get better. I suffered from severe PND, and a year or so on I am okay. Still have my how the Hell do I cope moments but I think Thats part of being a parent.

Hand here to hold.

marilynmonroe · 20/07/2012 08:42

In case anyone is interested. I'm starting to feel a little better. I've accepted it's going to a slow process.
