What is the difference between learning disability and mental health?

I'm not sure IQ is used as a benchmark any more....but people with learning disabilities have issues with learning due to a lower IQ (not to be confused with learning difficulties which I think refers to conditions like dyslexia rather than general problems learning across the board). Those learning disabilities can be mild, moderate, severe or profound and may or may not be accompanied by other disabilities.

People with mental health problems may well have a 'normal' IQ but have problems with mood, relationships, work etc., due to conditions like bi-polar, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety etc.

Some conditions like Aspergers/High functioning autism, can come under the umbrella of learning disability services, despite normal or sometimes very high IQ's. People with learning disabilities can also have mental health problems.

The two are so different that it's hard to explain! Learning disability is a difficulty in accessing new information. It is of a permanent nature and you're often but not always born with it. It can often have a biological cause such as brain damage or a congenital cause.

Mental health problems are an illness of the mind, are very often temporary (even if they can take years), have no biological cause and do not interfere with the ability to access new information in the same way (it may be harder due to concentration problems and anxiety).

It is actually quite hard ot explain how apples and cows are different from each other Smile
